2013 Webb broke into a middle-relief role with the Padres in 2009, relying heavily on a mid-90s fastball with plus movement to generate ground-ball outs. He has maintained that skill through parts of four major-league seasons, but he's shown few signs of further development, failing to either miss more bats or tone down his walk rate. Though Webb does employ a slider more than 30 percent of the time, it’s a fringy offering that serves as a change-of-pace tool, not as a wipeout whiff-inducer. All of those factors are likely to limit his ceiling to middle relief.
2012 Webb was one of two relief pitchers the Marlins acquired when they shipped then-disappointing center fielder Cameron Maybin to the Padres after the 2010 season. Despite his huge frame and above-average fastball, Webb doesn't generate a lot of strikeouts, instead relying on the defense behind him to convert boatloads of ground balls into outs. Though he went 0-for-4 in save chances last year, his ability to limit hard contact makes him a dark horse candidate for stray saves when Heath Bell is unavailable.
2011 Webb doesn't whiff many hitters for someone with mid-90s heat and wicked movement on all of his pitches, since his irregular release points prevent him from hitting his spots consistently. Last June and September—months during which Webb combined for 28 punchouts in 28 1/3 innings against just seven walks—offer the clearest picture of his potential, but things haven't always gone so well for the imposing right-hander. When the Marlins dangled Cameron Maybin in exchange for Webb and a mutable Mujica, the Friars did the right thing and sent their replaceable pieces packing. Webb may yet grow into his stuff, which would give the Marlins the dominating bullpen presence they crave.
2010 Webb had a solid major-league debut with the Padres late last season after being acquired from the Athletics in the Scott Hairston trade. Perhaps predictably for a former big-leaguer's son (his father Hank pitched for the Mets and Dodgers in the 1970s), unlike most young hard throwers Webb consistently throws strikes with his 93 mph sinking fastball and big-breaking slider. His performance was subpar in the minor leagues until last season but he took a big step forward thanks in part to becoming much more consistent with his mechanics. Webb will almost certainly begin this season in the bullpen, and could be a real surprise.
2009 Added to the 40-man roster in the offseason, Ryan Webb has been slow to develop, but the club feared they might lose him in the Rule 5 draft to a team who saw potential in a tall, lanky pitcher with a loose arm.
