BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Tatum assumed the backup catcher role in Baltimore in May after Jake Fox got off to a slow start, but with Matt Wieters healthy and averaging one day off per week, he only managed 27 starts. It's a good thing, too, because it's questionable whether Tatum even has a future as a backup catcher, much less as a guy who should be drawing multiple weekly starts. He has no bat whatsoever: no power, no speed, limited patience. The least a no-bat catcher can do is play solid defense, and Tatum did manage to catch attempted basestealers at a league average clip this year, but that was a small sample. They were successful on 93 percent of attempts in 2010.
2011 As a member of the International Brotherhood of Catch 'n' Throw reserves, Craig Tatum is required to pay his dues on time, never show any power, and play solid defense. He got the first two but failed the last, catching just seven percent of attempted basestealers, tying with the now-retired Mike Redmond for the lowest caught-stealing percentage of any backstop with over 100 innings. Worse, his ability to hit for average was overstated.
2010 Craig Tatum is cut from the Corky Miller mold; claimed off waivers by the Orioles in November, he will be lucky to scratch out a career as a strong-armed catch-and-throw backup.
2009 As a decent receiver behind the plate with a spray hitter's virtues at it, Craig Tatum has some value as a potential backup backstop.
2008 One of the minor league catchers that made Perez expendable, Craig Tatum had a nice batting-average-driven half-season in Sarasota, but came back to earth at Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League.

2010-06-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)given that terrifying stat, can't they try wieters at 1B to see if it breaks him out of his slump? surely they can get a wietersesque batting line out of their backup catcher...
(stately from atl)
Bench somebody so you can get Craig Tatum's bat in the lineup? Ew. That's absolutely the wrong way to go about developing Wieters, because his value is going to be as a very good hitting catcher who can actually catch as well. It's taking longer than most talent observers thought, but it's hardly out of the question that it will come together. (Jay Jaffe)
