2013 Stop us if you've heard this before: The Twins were desperate for anyone who could soak up innings late in 2012, so much so that they started looking for Allan Anderson and Les Strakerís phone numbers. Enter Vasquez, the former top prospect of the Texas Rangers, who at least had something of a pedigree to dream on, even though heís 28 and has a 4.59 ERA in five seasons at Triple-A. He got six starts, walked more batters than he struck out, and, shockingly, was not retained. Heíll trade off his name and youthful exploits for one more summer on somebodyís Triple-A roster, refusing to admit what many of us have had to, that he peaked too early.
2012 Plucked from the Diamondbacks off waivers just before the end of the season, Esmerling Vasquez can pump it in the mid-90s, but has been beset by control problems; the addition of an ineffective curveball did little to help, but maybe an organizational change will.
2011 Esmerling Vasquez is another young Diamondbacks hurler who possesses the stuff to succeed, but lacks the ability to make use of it effectively. Unfortunately, this description could be written for umpteen other pitching prospects in the system, and little separates Vasquez from the rest. He throws hard, but without control, and does not profile as a ground-ball pitcher. Throwing 94 mph will continue to earn him shots, but he practically eliminated the slider from his repertoire in favor of a mediocre changeup last season. To be more effective, he will need to utilize both off-speed offerings to offset the velocity of his heater. However, if he can't throw the slider for strikes, this assessment is moot.
2010 A short 26-year-old righty who did not make his major-league debut until this past season, Vazquez was able to sustain a decent semblance of his lower level strikeout rates, but could not strand runners, allowing 10 of 29 inherited runners to score. The Diamondbacks utilized his services in the rotation throughout the minors, as he combines a 95 mph fastball with a plus changeup and a good-not-great slider. The stuff to succeed is certainly thereóhe induced more swings and less contact than the league averageóbut he will need to work on locating and sequencing in order to remain, even as the final man in the bullpen.
2009 Esmerling Vasquez has a lot of arm strength and can touch 95 mph, but he completely stopped throwing strikes last year; his career is at a crossroads.
2008 Esmerling Vasquez dove for a popped-up bunt in the Arizona Fall League and tore his labrum. The Diamondbacks hope that he'll be able to rehab it non-surgically and be ready to go in spring training, but with an only average fastball, he's probably not anything more than a reliever even if he gets back to full strength.
