2011 After spending most of 2009 suffering from elbow inflammation and a frayed labrum, Daryl Thompson succumbed to another succession of injuries last season, but pitched well when healthy. An additional 18 innings of work in the AFL convinced the Reds to give him a spot on the 40-man, but only one of the fragile righty's Arizona outings came in the bullpen, where the Reds should consider keeping him.
2010 Thompson finally stayed relatively healthy in consecutive seasons in 2007 and 2008 and stormed all the way up to his big-league debut in '08, but his shoulder problems returned at the end of that season and limited him to just 29 1/3 innings in 2009. Now 24 and clearly incapable of holding up under a starters’ workload, he was outrighted off the 40-man roster in November and cleared waivers. If he manages to pitch his way back to the majors, it will be as a middle reliever.
2009 Thompson made stops at five different levels last season, traveling all the way from the Gulf Coast League to Yankee Stadium. He made his way through the minors by pounding the strike zone with mid-90s heat, but that proved more elusive during his brief stint in the majors. Still, the true down note to Thompson's season was shoulder soreness resulting in a minor league DL stay—not a promising sign for a player who already has an extensive injury history.
2008 Thompson was the pitcher in the Kearns trade who had his shoulder surgery before coming to the Reds. He's bounced back nicely and was young for his levels last year, but his extreme fly-ball tendencies and league-leading 19 homers in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League have to give one pause.
2007 Darryl Thompson is the prospect whose lot might be that he`s expected to become the first or second-best player acquired in the Kearns deal. Initially seen as a sleeper in the weak Nationals system because he throws in the low-90s and has a nice curve, he needs reps to master a change he can throw for strikes. `Non-serious` shoulder trouble kept him shelved much of the year, but he`s supposed to be fine by spring training. At his age, anything`s possible, and it will reflect well on Krivsky`s scouting if he pans out.

2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Joe, the Reds have announced that Daryl Thompson will make his major league debut tomorrow against the Yankees. Two questions: What do you think of aggressive promotion of young pitchers who are dominant in the minors? Who would've thunk that the Reds may yet end up with the better half of the Austin Kearns deal?
(Rick from Chicago)
I believe it was Gary Huckabay who proffered the idea that a guy who can pitch in the majors needs to be doing so regardless of age. (I'm paraphrasing.) These guys implode at all levels, so you might as well have him helping your team. I also think the level of health care and coaching is highest in the majors, so why not have a guy like Thompson (or Kershaw, or Chamberlain) benefitting from that? As long as workload is managed--and my god, is workload managed these days--it's a reasonable idea to promote quickly. (Joe Sheehan)
