2013 A former first-round pick, Snyder came up through the Baltimore system before joining the Rangers and appearing in a career-high 40 games last season. Working as a right-handed bench bat, he posted a .318/.348/.568 slash line in a small sample against lefty pitching, but also struck out in 37 percent of his overall plate appearances. In the field, Snyder saw action at all four corner spots—as well as one inning behind the plate—but is a below-average defender in the outfield. He’s serviceable at first and third base. Snyder is returning to the Rangers in 2013 on a minor-league deal with a non-roster invite to camp, but the likely increased role of Olt could relegate him to Triple-A.
2012 Baltimore's first round pick in 2005, Snyder hasn't panned out as expected. Drafted as a catcher, multiple injuries forced the O's try to him at third base before he finally settled in at first. While he has adapted enough to play average defense, he doesn't have the power or patience needed for a first baseman. Snyder looks like a major league backup at best.
2011 Make a list of current major-league first basemen: Mark Teixeira. Kevin Youkilis. Justin Morneau. Paul Konerko. We’ll stop there, not even having gotten around to Albert Pujols and Joey Votto. The offensive bar at first base is incredibly high, and Snyder isn’t rising above it so much as treating it like a limbo stick. Part of the problem with his disappointing season may have been the back injury that kept him shelved for five weeks (making the limbo that much harder), but that doesn’t excuse his lack of power and patience. Barring a major change in Snyder’s offensive profile—theoretically possible given his age, but unlikely—there just isn’t enough here to project him as a regular.
2010 The former first-round pick (in 2005) was having a breakout year in Bowie, but reverted to form at Triple-A. Snyder is a first baseman without much home-run pop, which means he needs to excel at the other things to have value. He does do some things well, but none excellently. He hits for a decent average, racking up some doubles by driving balls to the gaps, and his fielding is roughly average. That's just not good enough to compete in the majors, especially not at first base. In his favor, there's no one standing in his way.
2009 The former first-round pick showed signs of life as a prospect last year, turning into one of the Carolina League's top hitters. He's another year removed from the shoulder injury that ended his days as a catcher (and nearly his baseball career). As nice as it was, he's still not showing enough power to cut it as a major league first baseman.
2008 Snyder was a first-round pick in 2005, but a bad shoulder injury stunted his development and forced him away from catching. He played first base for Delmarva in the Sally League last year, and tried third base in Hawaii Winter League. His bat was as pedestrian as ever in the first half, but he apparently found a higher gear in June that lasted through Hawaii, where he out-hit the O's 2007 top pick, Matt Wieters.
2007 In 2005, Snyder had a 43:30 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but in 2006 it was 98:14. That is indicative about how much worse he was last year, offensively and defensively, than the player the O`s drafted in the first round in 2005. In his defense, he was playing with a torn rotator cuff. He should make it back around the start of the 2007 season, and, even though it was not his throwing shoulder that was hurt, the injury may end his catching career. Snyder is regarded as having enough hitting talent to move elsewhere, but this is an as-yet-unproven assertion.
2006 The Orioles` #1 draft pick last year, Snyder`s catching skills were surprisingly good, given that he`s fresh out of high school and wasn`t even a full-time catcher there. Snyder showed excellent patience and reasonably good power in his short time at Bluefield, but he`s a long way from Baltimore.

2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Joe Mahoney overtake (if not already) Brandon Snyder for the O's best 1B prospect? He's shown a lot of power this year...can he keep it going? Thanks.
(Reggie from MD)
Not a fan. 23-year-old guy putting up good, not great numbers in High-A? Pass. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon Snyder was very good in AA but has been not so hot in limited time at AAA. Is he still an above average long-term solution for the O's at 1b?
(Jay from Madison)
I don't think he was ever an above-average long term solution for O's at first base, so, No. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Have you heard anything from scouts about Brandon Snyder?
(Mike from Jax, FL)
Same 'ol story. Dude can hit, but not like a first baseman. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Brandon Snyder? Can he handle 3B better than Billy Rowell? Will his bat support a permanent move to 1B?
(mike from DC)
Saying he can handle third base better than Billy Rowell is like saying he'll be a better dictator than Idi Amin. Both are pretty bad there, and both have no MLB future at the hot corner. I do like Snyder's bat, but at the same time, like you point out, is it enough to be a 1b? I don't see it. (Kevin Goldstein)
