2010 Another seeming archetype on the D'backs roster, Alex Romero is a formerly over-hyped prospect with speed decent enough to stretch doubles into triples and to swipe a bag here and there. Unfortunately, the age-old axiom of not being able to steal first base applies; Romero makes little contact and has risible plate judgment. He's a fifth outfielder/defensive replacement at best.
2009 Once upon a time, a "Free Alex Romero" campaign briefly flowered, as he consistently put up solid numbers in the minors yet rarely showed up on any prospect lists. There was a reason for that absence, as he lacked tools and secondary skills. While he's a better hitter than he showed in his big-league debut, he's really no more than your classic Triple-A insurance type. Fortunately, fans don't take to "Recapture Alex Romero"-type campaigns with the same enthusiasm.
2008 Briefly seen as a prospect in the Twins organization, Alex Romero is now just hoping to get a shot to be somebody's fourth outfielder someday.
2007 Everything seemed to be coming together for Romero after a solid year at Double-A in 2005, but it all went backward last year. He got off to a horrible start at Triple-A and was sent back to the Eastern League as much for his attitude as his poor play. He recovered a bit during the summer months and hit almost .300 after his return to Triple-A, but his gap power and patient approach disappeared. Romero could be a fourth outfielder in the majors, but it`s not going to happen in 2007 without a return to his previous form.
2006 Romero is currently best prospect to come out of the organization`s commitment to scouting Venezuela. Originally seen as a speed guy who might make it as a fourth outfielder type, Romero has pleasantly surprised the organization with his developing power. He particularly did damage against right-handed pitching, bopping at a .485 clip against them. When someone does that in Double-A before he turns 22, he moves up everybody`s prospect lists. He might not get a shot in camp, but if hitters like Stewart and Ford falter, Romero will be a homegrown long-term solution.
