YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Rodriguez, a journeyman who couldn't stick with an Astros team that lost 107 games in 2012, resurfaced with the A's in 2014 and last year became a key part of their beleaguered bullpen. His mid-90s fastball and low-80s curve hit their intended targets more often than in the past, though not enough to make him a serious option in high-leverage situations. He was deadly with nobody on base and had an extreme reverse platoon split, holding lefties to a .174/.268/.198 line. When Fernando Abad's back problems flared up in July, Rodriguez got the call against southpaws and responded. He's an asset in middle relief, where he can soak up innings and take pressure off the guys at the back end.
2015 Fernando Rodriguez is defying the age-related gravity of velocity, throwing 95 mph heat that has been rising along with his strikeout rate since he moved permanently to the bullpen, but it wasn't enough to keep him from being designated for assignment by the A's in December.
2014 Pitch command has long been at the top of Fernando Rodriguez's bucket list; after missing the entire 2013 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, he could be a long way from crossing off that particular item.
2013 Rodriguez actually threw a little harder last year than in the past as he moved further from his former role as a starting pitcher. But it did him no good: His peripherals were similar to 2011 (belying a huge illusory increase in ERA), with a bit lower walk rate and a few more balls leaving the yard. He misses enough bats, but to become more than filler he needs to tune his control to the point where he's walking fewer than four batters per nine innings.
2012 With his stature, his intimidating delivery, and his mid-90s heat and wicked big-breaking curve, Rodriguez looks like a closer when he's on the mound. He also looks like a closer when you examine his strikeout rates, which skyrocketed upon his move to the bullpen in 2009. He even looked like a closer as he went unscored-upon in 33 of his first 43 appearances in 2011, despite his high walk rate. But that 43rd game was an outing of 2 1/3 innings, his longest of the season, and while he didn't allow any runs in that one, he wasn't the same afterward. He allowed eight runs, all earned, in his final four outings (just three innings), while striking out just one. Though he did top 94 mph with 10 of his 90 pitches the rest of the way, far too many were up in the zone, and his curve didn't have its earlier bite. He may not have had a great season going through 43 games, but he certainly had looked like a closer, with his 2.74 ERA and 56:24 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 49 1/3 innings.
2010 Hanging around Double-A ball in your age-25 season and racking up strikeouts on younger hitters isn't an ideal career choice, but it's what Fernando Rodriguez was left with after being bombed out of Salt Lake as a reliever.
