BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Primarily a shortstop, minor-league veteran Gregorio Petit can play any infield position and fail to hit at all of them.
2010 Gregorio Petit is a rock-solid defender who can play anywhere in the infield, but he raps out hits about as frequently as K-Fed.
2009 If Crosby continues to hit like a muscled-up Rey Ordonez, Petit might actually end up as the primary shortstop. The key here is defense, as Petit can really pick it, with the speed and instincts to reach plenty of balls, and the arm to take advantage of the other skills to good effect. He's no great shakes offensively, and his secondary skills are lacking. There will be worse shortstops out there with regular jobs in 2009, with Crosby perhaps among them.
2008 Petit has been playing shortstop one level ahead of Pennington and has proven to be the better prospect. Offensively the two are very similar; Petit might be a slightly better hitter, but like Pennington, he doesn't offer much in the way of secondary skills. What separates Petit from the pack is his defense; he is the best glove man in the system and is equally adept at second, third, or shortstop. The A's have been trying for years to develop versatile players to save them roster spots, and Petit is on pace to be the first one to actually work out.
2007 Gregorio Petit is an outstanding defender at any infield position and just might have enough bat in the end to be a solid utility player.

2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Beyond the fact that he isn't very good... Would it be a smart bet for Billy Beane to trade Bobby Crosby to a potential Furcal suitor just to shrink the market for him? The A's can't outbid anybody who might want Furcal, so shouldn't they want to be the only ones bidding? Then even if they don't sign Furcal, I don't really see some kind of a Gregorio Petit, Pennington, Mark Ellis as a downgrade at all. At least there's SOME defense, power and obp in that group, albeit not in the same place.

My problem with that is I don't think there is much of a market for Bobby Crosby. His value is lower than ever. It's a good idea in theory but I think it would be hard to execute. (John Perrotto)
