2013 Garrett Olson posted a 108.00 ERA in 2012, though FIP reveals that he didn't pitch anywhere near that poorly: a 12.14 mark is much more appropriate.
2012 The Mets signed former Orioles prospect Garrett Olson in the offseason, and scouts report that he is still left-handed.
2011 Since posting an ERA close to eight in his 2007 introduction to the majors, Olson has trimmed just over a run from that figure in each successive season. Barring a small-sample fluke, that progression will come to an end this season, since the lefty lacks the stuff to send it any lower. His peripherals played up slightly in relief, but he’s neither an asset in regular duty, nor tough enough on same-handed betters for situational work, though his 0.97 Leverage score pegged him as the most trusted of the interchangeable mop-up men behind David Aardsma and Brandon League.
2010 Acquired from the Cubs with Ronny Cedeno in exchange for Aaron Heilman, Olson split his time between Tacoma and Seattle last year, and split his time in Seattle between starting and relieving. He dropped his major-league ERA by more than a run for the second year in a row. Of course, his starting point was at 7.79, so if things hold it's going to be 2011 before he gets it under 4.00. Olson isn't really fooling anyone, and when you don't get strikeouts, don't get ground balls, and have poor control, you don't have much to fall back on except a healthy lifestyle and the love of a good woman. Olson could be in the mix for the fifth-starter's job or a back-of-bullpen spot, but unless he finds a new wrinkle there's not much hope of his becoming a significant asset in even those roles.
2009 The survey says that the defense behind Olson was 15 runs below average last year. Only two major league pitchers, Javier Vazquez and Nate Robertson, fared worse, and they both had at least 30 innings on Olson. By far the key location was third base, which earned a -9.3 behind Olson—and only Olson—compared to a +7.9 rating on the rest of the Oriole staff. Part of that would be having Aubrey Huff at third 50 percent more often than O's pitchers had to endure on average; another part is that an above-average number of Olson's "ground" balls are scorched, quasi-line drives. But on a deeper level, it doesn't make that much difference. Assign all possible responsibility to the fielders, and Olson is still a below-average pitcher who doesn't have an out pitch with which to finish off a major league hitter.
2008 The real Garret Olson lies somewhere between the one who throttled Triple-A and the one who stunk in the majors. A polished college lefty, Olson has three good pitches, but no devastating out-pitch, which limits his upside. In Baltimore, he fell into the common trap of trying to be very fine, afraid to trust the approach and pitches that got him there in the first place. At worst, he should enter 2008 as the first starter-in-waiting at Norfolk, but he has nothing left to prove in the minors.
2007 A polished college pitcher drafted in 2005, Olson relies on one of the best curveballs in the minors. He could probably step in as a lefty specialist in the majors right now. That`s a position he could fall back on if his changeup doesn`t continue to develop and he can`t make it as a starter, but right now, he`s the guy most likely to get called up in September prior to taking a shot at the 2008 rotation.
