BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Before Tyler Clippard was a gleam in Terry Collins' eye, there was Parnell to take a bullpen role on name recognition over performance. His momentary success after returning in June from Tommy John surgery was a mirage, and the strikeout numbers (eight over his first 12 innings) hinted at what was to come. Parnell's season finally went off the rails in late July, just as Jenrry Mejia's season-long suspension opened the setup-man role for him. The silver lining is that he threw harder as the season went on, even as his lack of command condemned him. We're loathe to judge a pitcher on his velocity, but Parnell's sinker doesn't have enough movement to be reliable without it.
2015 Parnell went under the knife for Tommy John surgery after just one appearance. It might not have been just a lost season, though; unlike Matt Harvey, perhaps the best candidate ever to make a full comeback from the procedure, Parnell will return with uncertainty about both his role and whether he has the tools to play it. He never quite got the swings and misses that an upper-90s fastball usually gets, instead making himself a groundball machine. If 96 becomes 92, how many of those groundballs will be elevated? It's typically unwise to judge a pitcher by his velocity—Jon Niese, Bartolo Colon, Rafael Montero and Dillon Gee are side-eyeing us right now—but Parnell's fastball velo and bullpen role might be directly correlative.
2014 Oh, and it was all going so well, too. Parnell was following up his breakout 2012 with an even better 2013 until August, when a herniated disc in his neck required season-ending surgery. By now, though, we know what he isthe fastball doesnt miss quite as many bats as the velocity might indicate, but that doesnt matter because the contact is always on the ground. One possible monkey wrench: Parnell allegedly dropped 30 pounds following surgery. Going by his listed weight, that puts him at 170 pounds, which might not be enough to drop and drive.
2013 Parnell has gone from a groundballing righty out of the bullpen to a ridiculously groundballing righty out of the bullpen. His sinking fastball averages 96-97 mph, he has no career platoon split (though in a rigorous analysis, we would regress that split significantly toward the league average given his relatively small number of batters faced so far), and he is, as you might expect, not susceptible to the home run. Closers are made, not born, and Parnell stands ready for his initiation.
2012 Everybody loves the radar gun, but Parnell is a lesson in how velocity isn't everything. Parnell's fastball averages more than 97 mph, and few pitchers in baseball are as likely to touch triple digits, yet 175 games into his pro career he's yet to establish himself as a reliable reliever in the late innings. He can miss a good share of bats based solely on his ability to throw hard, but the pitch is flat and straight, he doesn't command it well, and his slider is one in name only. He's going to get plenty of chances because of that ability to light up the third digit, but he's peaked unless he makes some major adjustments.
2011 Mets fans had many reasons to be pleased that Francisco Rodriguez lost his closer job, even if they weren't proud of the fact that the police had to get involved in wresting the gig away. Parnell's upper-90s heat and 4.1 K/BB ratio represented two of those reasons. His lone secondary offering of consequence was his slider, which nearly doubled the league average in terms of missing bats. Control had never been Parnell's forte before 2010, but a high strikeout rate can forgive all manner of sins. Lefties presented a greater problem in 2010 than they had in the past, but he has the youthand the sliderto make adjustments in order to prevent that split from reappearing.
2010 One of the hardest throwers the organization has had in years, Parnell's 94-97 mph fastball touched triple digits a couple of times in 2009, and while the rest of his repertoire lags well behind, that kind of fastball can be enough for a reliever to succeed. Parnell performed adequately, pitching well overall but having some problems with inherited runners. His 2009 stats are distorted by the eight-start look the Mets took with him beginning in August; he had a 7.93 ERA and allowed a .304 batting average. As a reliever, he was at 3.46 and .264, respectively. The Mets wanted him to pitch this winter in order to advance his conversion to starting, but Parnell refused the assignment, and was probably right to do so.
2009 The classic flame-throwing righty who lacks the third pitch needed to be a reliable starter, Parnell was converted to relief when he came up for a major league demitasse in mid-September. His fastball is a plus-plus offering that can reach into the high-90s in short bursts out of the pen, and also features late sink. Parnell backs that up with a good hard slider, so he has the right combination to be a capable set-up man. He's also shown the ability to retire left-handershe actually held them to a lower OPS than righties, 732 to 760, at his three stops last year. If there are any spots left after Omar's Extreme Makeover: Bullpen Edition, Parnell will be first in line for one this spring.
2008 There's a lot to like about Parnell, including low- to mid-90s velocity and a solid slider, but he's pretty rough around the edges. He doesn't have much of a changeup, his fastball is pretty straight, and his command is spotty. He's got the talent to get to the big leagues, but it will likely come with a move to the bullpen.

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-12-11 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who are your best bets to attain the title closer? I currently own shares of Dellin Betances, Neil Ramirez, and Bobby Parnell. Any probables in that group? Also, Any news on who offered Robertson?
(Closer to Closing from In the Bullpen)
I think you'll see Betances take the reigns at the back end of Yankees games for much of the 2015 season, and that should be a ton of fun to watch. Both Ramirez and Parnell are going to get opportunities, but I'm buying Betances more than those two. (Mark Anderson)
2013-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your take on Bobby Parnell? Does he hold onto the closer gig and, if so, what kind of numbers do you project for him? Thanks...
(LoyalRoyal from Watchin tourney)
I'm right there with you on the tourney, LoyalRoyal, trying to keep an eye on the Butler/Bucknell game as we chat.

I think Parnell is the best reliever in the Mets bullpen, so I do believe that he can keep the closer gig throughout the season. If he does retain it, I think he'll hit the low-30s in saves, with a mid-3.00s ERA and 70 strikeouts. (I am more bullish on Parnell than PECOTA, which has him regressing this year.) (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Which lower tier closers have the best chance at becoming elite, if any.
(rupertoooo from Lorton, VA)
time to plug my closer matrix article! http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=19615 -- I would love to see David Hernandez get a shot at closing. I like Bobby Parnell, Glen Perkins, and Greg Holland. (Jason Collette)
2011-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some current non-closers whom you could see closing at the beginning of next season?
(Andrew from Las Vegas)
This is a planned article topic for the near future, but I haven't taken a super close look yet. Guys that come to mind include Bobby Parnell, Mike Adams, Luke Gregerson, Kenley Jansen, and Aaron Crow. (Derek Carty)
2011-07-13 12:30:00 (link to chat)Based on what you've seen or hear, think Bobby Parnell takes the closer's job and runs with it?
(Trevor from Queens, NY)
Yes and yes. (Ben Lindbergh)
2009-04-08 15:00:00 (link to chat)How good can Bobby Parnell be?
(Jim121 from Queens)
He could be a decent middle reliever. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)So, the Mets are out of the Lowe sweepstakes? Who end up the fourth and fifth starters? The bullpen looks good but now the rotation has serious questions. Maine's coming off of surgery, Pelfrey's coming off of a ridiculous innings increase, and Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell are unproven at Triple-A, let alone the majors.
(SOJseth from NY)
They want to re-sign Perez and feel Niese or Parnell can make a serviceable No. 5. (John Perrotto)
2008-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Bobby Parnell or Eddie Kunz: Who was the better shot to be an internal closer option for the Mets next year? Are there any reasonable internal options? Would signing an extra starter and trying John Maine there make more sense?
(Meddler from Brooklyn, NY)
I think if either of those guys is closing for you, you have problems. (Kevin Goldstein)
