2013 Last year we warned the Braves not to fall victim to the Peter Principle by promoting Martinez to a role above his talent level. Atlanta listened. Martinez returned to his designated long-reliever slash rubber-arm role that works so well for him. He went multiple innings in 22 of his outings, and threw without a day of rest on a career-high 15 occasions. Martinez might be the best long reliever in the game, and that isnít a backhanded compliment.
2012 The rubber-armed Martinez went multiple innings in 31 of his 46 appearances while admirably mopping up messes. Despite low walk rates and respectable groundball rates, Martinez may never become much more than a suitable long reliever thanks to pedestrian stuff. His fastball tops out in the low-90s and outside of his changeup, the rest of his arsenal fails to inspire confidence. If any team has the bullpen depth to avoid falling victim to the Peter Principle, Atlanta is it, so expect Martinez to return to his janitorial post in 2012.
2011 Often the 12th pitcher on the roster, Martinez doesn't deserve a bigger role, but he's certainly good in the one that he has. Even if he sits around for a week, you know he's not going to walk anybody when he comes in. He doesn't have much of a breaking ball, but his changeup makes him effective against left-handers, and he's sturdy enough to deliver multiple innings when needed, even as an emergency starter. You're looking at his ceiling.
2010 Rule 5'd away from the Tigers in 2006, the year after he underwent Tommy John surgery, Martinez excelled in his first season at Double-A and got the call to the Marlins when the entire bullpen was hit by fatigue and injury at the same time. He augments a so-so fastball with a slider, change, and sinker. His strikeout numbers have always been middling, but he induces grounders and (in the minors, at least) rarely issues a walk, with an average of 1.8 free passes per nine innings. Primarily a starter, Martinez is a nice story but seems unlikely to succeed in a role requiring extended exposure given the ease with which batters make contact.

(stydings from NJ)
Frank involves all of our front office and scouts in all of the major decisions so it's never a case of "we got this player because of this person." I am proud of all the moves we have made, but it's nice to see career minor league players like Constanza or Brooks Conrad get an opportunity here in Atlanta when they were signed as minor league free agents. I'm also proud of some of the guys we have found on the waiver wire, acquiring the likes of Eric O'Flaherty and Cristhian Martinez for $20,000 per claim. (John Coppolella)
