2011 Drafted in the 13th round of the 2005 amateur draft, right-hander Doug Mathis is an organizational arm who has seen time at the major-league level in each of the past three seasons, including a solid run of middle relief in 2009. Getting another look in 2010, Mathis was quickly exposed, allowing a remarkable seven home runs in only 22 innings of relief. Finally souring on his average-to-below-average stuff across the board, the Rangers outrighted Mathis in November. He elected free agency but will struggle to find a home on a 25-man roster.
2010 After getting non-tendered following the 2008 season, Mathis re-signed with the Rangers and managed to get sucked into middle-innings mop-up work, usually in games the Rangers were losing by four runs or more. He'll never blow you away on a stuff level, as he's a bit of a generic sinker/slider righty whose heats is in the 89-92 mph range, but he knows how to hit his spots, set up hitters, and generally keep the ball on the ground. There's nothing sexy about it, but it can work as the eleventh guy on a staff until big-league hitters figure him out, because his inability to miss many bats means there's a great chance of their catching up to him.
2009 Seen as more of an organizational arm in the past, Doug Mathis could work his way into the big-league bullpen thanks to his ground ball-generating sinker.
