2012 Good catch-and-throw skills are the only things Jason Jaramillo has going for him, as his bat does nothing to distinguish him from the other defense-only backstops in the system.
2011 Happy-go-lucky optimists, the Pirates were hopeful that Jaramillo would bloom into a starter when they acquired him from the Phillies in a trade for Ronny Paulino during the 2008-09 offseason. Instead, he's taken on the look of a backup backstop lifer. He's above-average defensively with a strong arm but is lacking at the plate, where his propensity for grounding into double plays is compounded by an absence of power. At 28, he is what he is; fortunately, he can make an honest living as what he is for some time.
2010 Jaramillo had an adequate rookie season as the backup catcher, though he proved to be stretched offensively when asked to play semi-regularly while Ryan Doumit sat out two and a half months with a broken right wrist in the first half of the season. Though a switch-hitter, he struggled to hit lefties in limited exposure against them, which depressed his overall rates. Jaramillo's value lies more on the defensive side, as pitchers like throwing to him and he possesses a strong arm, though his caught-stealing percentage was just average. It is hard to imagine him becoming a regular behind the plate, but he's more than good enough to fashion a nice career as a caddy.
2009 Jaramillo is a gap hitter with a decent approach and a good arm, but there's nothing about his game that stands out. He's been stuck at the upper levels of the system for the last three years, but with two outstanding young catchers coming up through the system he was stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Fortunately for him, he was traded to the Pirates in the offseason for Ronny Paulino, where he'll compete for the job of backing up Ryan Doumit this spring.
2008 The gap between starting catchers and their backups has become so severe that teams with a secondary backstop of any quality have a real tactical advantage. Underqualified to start, Jaramillo is overqualified to be a backup by the standards of Wil Nieves or Paul Bako. He's a good defender, and though he won't hit with any real impact, he's more than an automatic out.
2007 Mike Lieberthal`s departure creates a long-term catching void, one that management hoped would be filled by Jaramillo. It still may be, but not in 2007. Jaramillo was aggressively pushed up two levels last year, and his offense suffered, although the bruised hand that cost him three weeks early on didn`t help. Defensively solid, his lack of speed means he`ll need to make plenty of solid contact to get hits, something he did in college with metal bats but hasn`t done as a pro.
2006 A 23-year-old catch-and-throw receiver compared to Johnny Estrada, Jaramillo`s 2005 batting stats in the Sally League were encouraging. Still, he`ll be lucky if he beats Estrada`s career mark of playing in 100 games in a season before turning 28.

2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)With the Pirates housecleaning well underway, who's the next to go? Would they entertain offers for Ryan Doumit?
(Rob from Alaska)
I think it's possible they would trade Doumit since they two young catchers they like in Jason Jaramillo and Robinzon Diaz. I also think he wouldn't fight a trade because he is clearly unhappy about the direction of the franchise. (John Perrotto)
