BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 The Pirates were enthralled with Steven Jackson's sinker and shuttled him back and forth between Triple-A and the major leagues something like 67 times over the past two seasons, but he became a free agent at the end of 2010 and will seek out another shuttle as fun to ride as the Indy Express.
2010 Jackson is one of seemingly 173 pitchers the Pirates have claimed off waivers from the Yankees since Neal Huntington became GM. It's enough to make you think the Yankees were an organization known for producing talented young pitchers, but they're not; if the Pirates can succeed where the Bombers failed with their various acquisitions, perhaps the Yankees should try claiming Pirates pitching instructors on waivers. Jackson began last season in the majors with the Yankees, but never got into a game before being sent down. The Pirates claimed him in May, and he shuttled between minor- and major-league bullpens, though he did little to distinguish himself. He'll be given every chance to make the club in spring training because the Pirates like the idea that he can induce lots of ground balls with his sinker... and he's a former Yankee, so he has to be good, right?
2009 A move to the bullpen added velocity to Steven Jackson's fastball, sink to his splitter, and control to his slider; according to StatCorner, Jackson led International League relievers in swinging strike-percentage, a sign that the sole remaining product of the second Randy Johnson trade may be ready to help.
2007 Drafted out of Clemson in 2004, Jackson posted the second-best ERA in the Southern League last year. His stuff isn`t great, but he has a good slider and picked up a split-fingered fastball from former closing great Bryan Harvey, father of Jackson`s college teammate (and current Marlins prospect) Kris Harvey. Dealt to the Yankees in the Randy Johnson deal, he joins what is becoming a long line of B/C grade starting pitching prospects waiting for a crack at the big league staff.

2009-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much of an injury risk (yes, fantasy) is Steven Jackson this year? With an early pick am I better off going with a lower-upside but "safer" player or is S-Jax not SO risky as to do that?
(Dave from NYC)
I really like Jackson in that offense. He's had muscular problems so he's certainly not top 3, but he's top five. Peterson, MJD, Forte, Jackson, Slaton. Yes, I have Peterson as 1, while Football Outsiders has MJD at 1. I just can't take Jones-Drew as the overall 1 when he's never been the feature back. Signs indicate he can handle it, but given that choice, I'll take Peterson. (Will Carroll)
