BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Once the center fielder of the future and the organizationís 2008 minor-league player of the year, Daryl Jones continues going backward. Removed from the 40-man roster after the 2010 season, Jones was demoted to Double-A in July. His best tool, his speed, has been compromised by tendinitis in his knees and hamstring problems. Heíll try to resurrect his career at 25.
2011 Treading water is a necessary skill for sailors, lifeguards, and would-be religious figures, but for a baseball prospect, thereís little worse. Jones barely kept his head above the elements in his third trip through Double-A, posting numbers similar to those of his disappointing 2009. Heís never developed the power stroke scouts believed would eventually appear, and with an iffy arm that limits him defensively, heís not particularly well-suited for a bench role. The Cardinals have taken him off the 40-man roster, and now that Jon Jay has motored past him, Jones is running out of time.
2010 Last year's LASIK-aided breakout set the stage for this year's disappointment as Jones struggled through a nagging quad injury; he wound up losing a good six weeks in the second half. Even if you're inclined to give him a pass, he did little to help himself in the Arizona Fall League, striking out a quarter of the time. Because of concerns that his arm might restrict him to left, the disappearing power is another worry. He's one of the best talents left in a thin system, but he'll have to regroup and deliver power to regain top prospect status in this or any organization.
2009 There might not be a minor leaguer who took a bigger step forward last year. Jones was a great football player in high school, and his focus on pigskin meant he had less baseball experience than is typical for an upper-round draft pick, so he needed more at-bats than the typical youngster to grow comfortable facing pro pitching. Now that's he's settled in, watch out. Right now he projects as a corner outfielder in the show, and Cardinals fans can start dreaming of a home-grown tandem of Rasmus and Jones that could rival the Ray Lankford-Bernard Gilkey combo of the early-90's.
