2013 A late-bloomer who came out of nowhere to claim the Dodgers' closer role in mid-2011, Guerra had a difficult time writing a follow-up, mainly because he kept getting hurt. Though he avoided the nightmare scenario when a Brian McCann line drive hit his jaw on April 25, he tore his right lateral meniscus trying to avoid the shot. Pitching through the injury, he soon lost the ninth inning job to Kenley Jansen, and just as he was settling into a setup role, he finally underwent surgery to repair the knee. His misfortunes continued upon returning, as an oblique strain wiped out his final month, and he underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery in early November to clean up bursitis in his AC joint. He should be ready to roll in time for spring training, and figures to be part of the setup crew again.
2012 If you were to have bet on which Dodger organization pitcher would wind up leading the 2011 squad in saves, you'd have gotten odds longer than 1000-1 on Guerra. In his third go-round at Chattanooga, he cleaned up his delivery, enabling higher velocity and more strikes; with the Dodgers bullpen decimated by injuries in mid-May—Broxton, Kuo, Padilla and Hawksworth were on the DL, while Jansen was headed there—Guerra got the call. With his 94 mph fastball/slider combo, he pitched reasonably well amid a nine-week stretch where six Dodgers notched saves, took over as closer just before the All-Star break, and converted his first 10 opportunities and 21 of 23; notably, his strikeout rate rose from 6.1 before the break to 8.2 after. All in all, another data point for the "closers are made, not born" camp. He'll likely enter 2012 in that role, which hardly makes him the team's best reliever, just the one with the most ninth-inning cookies.
2011 A 2004 fourth-round pick, Javy Guerra missed nearly half the season due to injuries. Despite his 6-foot stature, he's a hard thrower, but Guerra has been so beset by control problems that he has yet to reach Triple-A.
2010 Javy Guerra has taken his sweet time climbing the organizational ladder since being a fourth-round pick in '04; he's undersized, and his command lacking, but the Dodgers like his power arsenal and aggressive approach, particularly out of the bullpen.

2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any reason to think that Javy Guerra will get save chances in the mess, that is the White Sox bullpen?
(Chuck Knoblauch from 1B line seats )
Maaaaaaaan, I didn't think Maikel Cleto would be a thing in that bullpen but he was, briefly. If Putnam implodes Robin might ball up and cry himself to sleep over the 9th, and then start giving the ball to Javy. (Mauricio Rubio)
