BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Eric Hurley was sidelined with shoulder- and wrist-related injuries for over two years, but the former first-round pick finally made it back to the mound, flashing a low-90s fastball and a slider for the Surprise Rafters in the Arizona Fall League.
2010 Once one of the top arms in the system, but someone who stalled at the upper levels, righty Eric Hurley took another step backwards by missing all of 2009 following shoulder surgery.
2009 Once one of the top pitchers in the system, Hurley almost seems to be frozen in time, having made little progress in the past two years. His fastball hasn't lost its plus velocity or movement, but it also hasn't gotten any better. His slider remains good, but it's hardly a wipeout offering, and his changeup is still inconsistent. That's good enough to pitch reasonably well in the minors, but the leap forward to succeed in the big leagues hasn't occurred, and he's on the verge of being lost in the shuffle.
2008 Hurley is seen by many as the top prospect in the Rangers' organization, but that's only because somebody had to be. Hurley has size and a solid three-pitch mix, but he has always struggled against left-handers and didn't exactly blow anyone away at Triple-A. He's still a very good prospect, but his ceiling is no higher than a solid third-starter/innings-eater. The good news is that players like this are worth $10-12 million a year on the open market.
2007 Hurley, a high school teammate of Billy Butler`s, is beginning to look a lot like the real thing. His fastball is in the 92 to 95 MPH zone and he moves it around with aplomb. His slider works well and, when he gets the changeup worked out, he`ll be better armed for the continued climb upwards. It wouldn`t be surprising to see him in Arlington as a late season call-up this year and battling for a rotation spot in 2008. If that changeup doesn`t happen, he could find a home in the pen as a power reliever/guy who tells stories about how Butler`s defense was even worse when he was 16 but he got all the hot chicks anyway.
2006 The Rangers selected Hurley with a second 1st-round pick in 2004, their compensation for losing John Thomson. Hurley walks a few too many batters and there are mechanical concerns, but he`s also only 19, strikes out nearly a batter an inning, and rarely gives up the long ball. As with all 19-year-olds whose career is throwing a baseball in the low- to mid-90s, the potential for injury is the elephant in the room. So far, Hurley looks like a prospect.

2009-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Eric Hurley and Matt Harrison return to the Rangers next year, if so, Do they go into spring training with ALL of Millwood, Feldman, Hunter, Hurley, Harrison, Holland, McCarthy, and Feliz in the rotation?
(Ira from North Texas)
Both should return, but no, they won't go with an eight man rotation. They'll pick the best five, period. (Will Carroll)
