2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2012 Righty reliever Juan Gutierrez spent most of the season sidelined by arm issues that led to Tommy John surgery in September. He’ll miss most or all of 2012.
2011 Last year, we suggested that Gutierrez would take over as the Diamondbacks' closer should they move Chad Qualls. We also considered his 2.5 percent home run per fly ball rate to be completely unsustainable. Toward the end of last season, Gutierrez not only became the closer after Qualls was sent to the Rays, but saw his HR/FB balloon to over 15 percent. To make matters worse, he also allowed a substantially higher percentage of fly balls and struck out fewer batters, neither of which is a flavorful ingredient in a recipe for success. In his favor, a HR/FB that high is unlikely to persist, and he still possesses a blistering fastball and a biting slider. Whether he'll continue to close has yet to be determined, but whatever his role, he will play a key role in the bullpen.
2010 Acquired in the Jose Valverde deal under the assumption that he could bloom into a key rotation cog, Gutierrez transformed in 2009 from frustrating farmhand starter into relatively reliable reliever. With almost a whiff per frame and a passable walk rate, perhaps Gutierrez can be groomed into the second coming of traded set-up man Tony Pena. Alternatively, if the Snakes decide to move increasingly expensive veteran Chad Qualls midway through the year, expect Gutierrez—who filled in well for Qualls in September—to take over in the closer's role. Gutierrez's success was largely derived from a minuscule HR/FB that is sure to regress and an ability to induce feeble swings out of the zone that should be sustainable, provided he doesn't fall in love with his 95 mph fastball and keeps mixing in his slider.
2009 Gutierrez was one of the key elements in the deal that sent Jose Valverde to Houston. He's a big-bodied power righty with a good sinker who was seen as nearly big-league ready when Arizona added him. Instead, he was arguably the most frustrating prospect in the Snakes' system. He was maddeningly inconsistent, often sandwiching one good start between two in which he'd fail to get out of the fourth inning. He has those occasional successes to cling to, but his spot on the totem pole is nonetheless much lower.
2008 Dealt to the Diamondbacks in the Jose Valverde trade, Gutierrez relies mainly on a sinking fastball in the low 90s to get groundballs. His other pitches are just passable, and his command of everything needs work. The rapid development of someone like Fausto Carmona is the model, but the D'backs would be happy to just get a good year from him in middle relief.
2007 The Astros have a number of strong-armed Latin imports in the system, with a particular concentration on Venezuelans. Gutierrez is the one who has gotten the best results. His mid-90s fastball and curveball are both above-average offerings, but he doesn`t really have an effective off-speed pitch, leading many to project him as a reliever. He`ll be at Triple-A to begin 2007, but he could get a look at some point during the season.
