BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Carter is a living testament to the theory of the hot hand and streaky performance, alternating bouts of complete inadequacy with torrid stretches when his bat carries the offense. The roller-coaster ride began with a 2010 debut that saw him go hitless in his first 33 at-bats, stirring up Dan Johnson nightmares for the Oakland faithful; another big plummet was 2011's pitcher-esque 310 OPS over 46 plate appearances. In 2012 he finally delivered on his fence-clearing potential with a summer hot flash before disaster struck down the stretch and he collected splinters during the push to the playoffs. He has the upside to be the best right-handed masher to man first base in Oakland since Mark McGwire, but Carter could just as easily find himself back in Sacramento if he continues the Jekyll-and-Hyde act at the plate.
2012 For several years now, the talk has been that Chris Carter will eventually become the middle-of-the-order power hitter that the A’s so desperately need. The slugger has all the characteristics of a prototypical cleanup hitter: enormous power, on-base ability, and an intimidating presence in the box. So far in his career, Carter looks the part in the minors, but when called upon for major league action, the weaknesses in his game are easily exploited by experienced pitchers. The sample size at the highest level is small, so it’s too early to label Carter as a Quad-A hitter, mashing in the minors then getting mashed in the majors. But his ability to make contact against superior pitching seems suspect, and the 25-year-old needs to take a step forward in 2012 or his status as a future Japanese import will be cemented.
2011 Carter was slow to get started at Triple-A, but slugged 16 home runs over a 48-game span to earn his first taste of the big leagues. His start was disastrous—he introduced himself to A's fans with an 0-for-33 streak, the third-worst beginning to a big-league career for a position player since 1920. Recovering, he hit .333 (13-for-39) with three home runs for the balance of the season. With over 100 bombs in his last three seasons, Carter has more power than anyone else in the organization, including the big-league level. When the 2010 season concluded, he appeared to have a real chance at a big-league job, but those hopes were dashed by the Josh Willingham and Hideki Matsui acquisitions. The A's will spend more than $10 million to block their best offensive prospect this year.
2010 After leading the minor leagues in total bases in 2008, Carter got off to a solid start at Double-A Midland, but absolutely exploded during the second half of the year, including a 62-for-143 (.434) run with the Rockhounds that finally moved him up to Triple-A, where he slugged four more homers in 13 games. The best power hitter in the system, Carter also became a much better all-around hitter in 2009, significantly cutting down his strikeout rate, so he's nearly ready. The A's briefly dreamed of moving him to the outfield due to the first-base logjam, but trading away Brett Wallace and non-tendering Jack Cust helped open things back up. All Carter may have to do is wait for the next Daric Barton slump for his path to the majors to be clear.
2009 Carter had a busy offseason, moving from the White Sox to Arizona in the Carlos Quentin deal, and lasting a week or so there before moving on to Oakland as part of the Haren package. Oakland is glad he's with them after he led the minors in extra-base hits and total bases despite hitting just .259—only 56 of his 131 hits were singles. He's an incredibly streaky hitter whose homers come in bunches, as do his strikeouts. The A's hope he can improve enough at third base to stay there, but most see him as a first baseman in the end, with some observers even throwing Ryan Howard comps out there.
2008 A hulking high school draftee tabbed in the 15th round in 2005, Carter had an excellent first full professional season last year, showing the power that got him picked but also improved command of the strike zone. If he has a handicap, it's his fielding, which is a bit stiff and clumsy, but at his age, he's got years to work on that. Traded twice in the offseason-first to Arizona for Carlos Quentin, then to Oakland in the Dan Haren deal-Carter now finds himself in an organization that's committed to coaching hitters to work for their pitch, so his potential to break out just got a little bit better.
2007 After flopping in extended spring training, Carter returned to Rookie-ball and recovered to have a nice season, flashing power potential that shines through the harsh translations for league and altitude effects. It will be power that pushes Carter to the big leagues; his swing is too long to provide for much contact hitting ability, and he isn`t much of an athlete. He`ll get his chances in a thin system. His short-term goal will be reaching Winston-Salem by year`s end.
