BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Carillo's name seemingly showed up in the transactions every day last September. The Padres designated him for assignment, after which he was claimed off waivers by the Phillies. Then the Phillies DFA'd him and the Padres reclaimed him. When the Padres waived him a second time, the Astros nabbed him in hopes of resurrecting his flagging career this season. Carillo was the Padres' first-round draft pick in 2005 after starring at the University of Miami, where the Hurricanes went a remarkable 34-0 in his starts. However, he lost more than just his original UCL in his 2007 Tommy John surgery, and hasn't been quite the same since.
2010 Carillo was once a top prospect as the Padres' first-round draft pick in 2005, a tyro with a fastball that reached 97 mph when he wasn't spinning a curveball with bite. However, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007, and is still trying to regain arm strength—sorry folks, not every TJS winds up happily ever after. Carillo's stuff was OK last season, and the Padres are hopeful that the passage of time will further heal him, but in the meantime he's close to the bottom of a lengthening list of rotation options.
2009 The club's first-round pick in 2005 and once the top prospect in the system, Carrillo is now the guy you point to every time someone tells you that Tommy John surgery isn't that big a deal anymore. Once on the brink of the majors, Carrillo instead spent 2008 getting smacked around by California League hitters for a .301 batting average while walking more batters than he was able to strike out. If there's any silver lining here, it's that he was beginning to regain his low- to mid-90s velocity in the Arizona Fall League, but everything else is still a long way off.
2008 Cesar Carrillo suffered another lost year in 2007, making five awful appearances before Tommy John surgery put him on the shelf. He can't be considered a prospect any longer
2007 The franchise`s best (and perhaps only) real pitching prospect, Carrillo was a first-round pick in 2005 after serving as the staff ace at the University of Miami, where he was worked like a galley slave. That last bit is what has kept everyone waiting for more, because, while Carrillo`s plus fastball-curve-change mix seems geared for big-league success, his elbow gave out in June. The Padres are hoping rest will do the trick, and that he`ll be ready to get back on the accelerated timetable they had planned for him in the spring. If he`s sound, he`ll almost certainly show up in the Padres rotation at some point this summer.
2006 In the 2005 amateur draft, the Padres set their sights on getting a polished pitcher who had faced collegiate competition and could be expected to advance through the system quickly--the same strategy that led them to Tim Stauffer in 2004. Carrillo was the 18th player selected in the draft, and he signed with the Padres quickly. By season`s end, he was pitching in Double-A. He`s the best pitching prospect in the organization, and will likely make a token appearance with the Padres this year. Maybe more.
