BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 The winner of the annual Deion Sanders Award, given to the player whose media attention outstrips his on-field performance by the greatest margin. Shinjo wants to play every day, but his best chance of helping a team is as a platoon partner and defensive sub. Signed by the Mets, who might use him as the right side of a banjo-hitting center field platoon, given their lack of other options.
2002 The Mets gambled that Shinjo would be more effective against American pitching than Japanese pitching, and it appears that they were right. All the team won, however, was yet another solid fourth outfielder. As impressive a defensive player as Shinjo turned out to be, he simply is not productive enough offensively to play every day.
2001 The Mets signed Tsuyoshi Shinjo about two weeks after the Mariners reached an agreement with Ichiro Suzuki. Unlike Suzuki, Shinjo is a low-average slugger in the mold of Vinny Castilla. He is supposed to be a very good defensive outfielder, winning the Japanese version of the Gold Glove seven times.
