2013 In 2001, Baseball America named Trevor Bell the nationís best 14-year-old, except 14-year-olds aren't far from outdoing him now and he likely won't be facing any 14-year-olds in Toledo.
2012 If Scott Kazmir had held on for just three or four starts before kabooming, it might have been Bell who took over his fifth spot in the rotation and earned a steady major league per diem. Instead, Kazmir lasted just one start, and while the Angels were surveying their options, Bell was still being stretched out in Triple-A after an injury-interrupted spring. Tyler Chatwood got the call, and Bell spent another season in swingman purgatory. He throws strikes and gets ground balls and would survive as a fifth starter, but he might never get a chance to show it.
2011 Bellís second exposure to the majors left fewer scars than the first, but while heís unlikely ever to be burned as badly as he was by his scalding í09 cup of coffee, the odds are against a complete recovery. At 24, heís probably a finished, fringy product, saddled with a low-90s fastball that garners few swings and misses, and control and ground-ball ability that arenít quite good enough to overcome that handicap. With over 80 major-league innings under his belt, the southpaw from North Hollywood sports a .397 BABIP. His defenders may very well get to more balls in the future, but if the leftyís repertoire doesnít start to look less hittable, the Angels will continue to get their Bell rung.
2010 Oh, the perils of child stardom. The grandson of one of the original Bozo the Clown actors, Bell starred in commercials during his youth, gaining further fame when Baseball America anointed him the country's top 14-year-old in 2001. Alas, Bell's velocity as a prospect has receded since, and he's now a command-and-control type who backs up a low-90s fastball with a solid slider and changeup. He didn't miss many bats at Double-A or Triple-A, but got his share of popups and a good deal of help from his defense. Recalled in August, his stuff didn't play so well at the big-league level, as batters scorched him for a 26 percent line-drive rate.
