2012 Berg's sinker works just fine, thank you. He's allowed a .265 batting average and a .361 slugging percentage for his career—not great, but with the groundball-induced double plays, it's good enough to hold a roster spot. Except that the other pitches don't work, and he frequently misses the strike zone for fear of getting them clobbered, leading to an an unacceptable .346 career on-base percentage allowed and a likely return to Triple-A.
2011 Repeated attempts to reap the benefit of Justin Berg's extreme ground-ball tendencies ran up against his inability to get big-league hitters to cooperatively tap them into play.
2010 A 43rd-round pick of the Yankees whose previous claim to fame was being traded straight up for Matt Lawton, Berg is a ground-ball machine who saw his big-league dreams come true last August when he worked 12 effective innings for the Cubs' pen. Pitching entirely in relief for the first time but still not missing many bats, Berg put up the best numbers of his career for an Iowa club that did its best to match him up against right-handed hitters—good thing, too, since he posted a 1.85 WHIP versus lefties. Add in a career 1.04 K/BB ratio in the upper minors, and Berg’s future at best involves a one-way ticket to ROOGY-ville.
2009 A beefy sinkerballer, Justin Berg has been added to the 40-man roster in recognition of his abilities to reduce the game to infield pattycake, but problems against lefties and struggles in winter ball reflect a far from certain future.
