2009 After getting hammered during his first taste of the majors with the Yankees, Beam washed up in PNC Park and pitched effectively at times. His sin has always been a fastball that has less movement than a spavined zebra. He really is just a 12th man on a pitching staff in an era where dialing past 11 might seem excessive.
2008 The Yankees used 18 different relief pitchers in 2007-not counting lone relief appearances by Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, and Mike Mussina-and yet never once called on T.J. Beam, who spent the entire year on the 40-man roster. Those five home runs he allowed in 18 major league innings in 2006 must have made quite an impression.
2007 After each shelling, Torre would tell Beam, `We believe in you, we need you. I need you.` It was like a musical, or one of those disturbingly homoerotic things that Kirk would sometimes say to Spock on Star Trek. The lanky Ole Miss product has a good fastball but--shades of early Scott Proctor--it doesn`t move much. Beam`s minor league line strongly argues that he can do this pitching thing, but, as with Proctor, he`s going to need to develop a reliable off-speed pitch to set up the cheese.
