2013 Once considered the Cardinals' catcher-in-waiting, Andersonís game has gone sour on the shelf watching the Cardinals indulge their fetish for veteran catch-and-throw types to caddy for the indestructible Yadier Molina. Once the Cards finally used an in-house option they went with strong-armed Tony Cruz, leaving Anderson to cool his heels for another hot summer in Memphis. His recent numbers havenít been pretty for a catcher whose bat needs to overcome an unsavory defensive reputation, but Andersonís solid batting eye leads to enough walks to inspire hope he can meet the minimal offensive requirements of a backup backstop. The White Sox picked him up last fall as cheap Pierzynski insurance, so he might finally get his chance on the South Side.
2012 Once one of the organizationís top prospects, Andersonís progress has stalled. After a brief stint with the big club in 2010, he returned to Triple-A for a fourth season while Gerald Laird was brought in to serve as Yadier Molinaís caddy. When opportunity knocked in May in the form of a broken finger for Laird, Anderson remained in Memphis, leapfrogged by Tony Cruz. Given a chance, Andersonís bat should play at the next level. But concern about his catch-and-throw skills remains, despite an endorsement from Mike Matheny, the former Gold Glove receiver who has worked with Anderson to improve his defense. Still on the 40-man roster, Anderson should be in the mix to battle for a backup spot. But with an option year remaining, he could find himself with the Memphis blues again.
2011 Defense has always been the question with Anderson, but this year he not only bounced back from an injury-plagued 2009 to display his usual potent lefty bat, he also impressed the organization with his solid work behind the dish. His collection of skills is superior to those of half of the starting catchers in the league, and in most other organizations heíd be a shoo-in for at least part-time duty with the big club, but La Russa and Duncan have traditionally preferred top-notch catch-and-throw skills when selecting their Yadi caddies. During the offseason, GM John Mozeliak was said to be looking for a backup backstop who can use his bat for more than pounding in nails. Naturally, the old men in uniform preferred Gerald Laird.
2010 A particularly nasty home-plate collision separated Anderson's shoulder, ending his season in June and deferring for a year the question of whether his future is as a bargaining chip or a backup to Yadier Molina. Given the abbreviated season, there aren't a lot of conclusions to draw. To the positive, he hit right-handers well (.285/.335/.454), and threw out 28 percent of basestealers. He's hit lefties in the past, so the only major obstacle preventing his taking on some team's catching chores is that he needs more reps to improve his receiving skills; doing so would push him into starting consideration somewhere.
2009 Mr. Anderson might not be The One, but he's arguably the best catching prospect in the NL. The Cards are set behind the dish, however, so they might be open to dealing him for the right offer. Anderson had walked once in every 12 PAs on his career before arriving in Memphis, but he bumped that to once in 9.5 there. While knocked for his defense, Anderson increased his caught-stealing percentage from 27 in 2007 to 38 last year, and has the potential to be adequate defensively. The last remaining question is whether the power will start to come.
2008 In something of a surprise, the Cardinals had Anderson skip High-A and move straight to the Texas League, where he hit for average and little else. Holding your own as a 20-year-old catcher in the Texas League is notable, but the excitement over Anderson is based largely on his ability to slap line drives, and his contact rate is low for hitter of that type. He hasn't shown power, and he has catcher's speed and average defensive skills. The end result is likely to be a Paul Lo Duca/A.J. Pierzynski-type of player in the majors.
2007 At 19, Anderson was among the younger set in the Midwest League last year, but he didn`t play like a na?f. Doors can open pretty fast for left-handed hitting catchers, even ones who are still developing their defensive games, as Anderson is. He began the season with an invite to the big league training camp, so he`s a pretty big blip on the Cardinals radar.
