YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Venters was not his usual dominant self in 2012. He allowed more hits and runs than we’re accustomed to seeing, and pitched fewer innings. Granted, the decrease in workload seemed like an organizational emphasis to reduce the burden placed on the pillars of the bullpen. Given Venters’ walk- and strikeout-heavy approach, it’s not a bad idea as he’s always liable to run a high pitch count. An increase in home runs allowed would be alarming, except the bout of gopheritis was contained to the first half. Venters may not return to excellence, but he should still provide value as a set-up man.
2012 The 2011 league leader in relief appearances, Venters has more innings pitched than every reliever except Tyler Clippard over the past two seasons. Groundballs are good, and strikeouts are even better. When a pitcher can get bundles of both, you know superlatives are on the way. Venters does just that with his bowling ball sinker and much-improved breaker, sporting a strikeout rate exceeding one batter per inning pitched and a career groundball rate over 70 percent. The only blemish on an otherwise pristine picture is a high walk rate created by messy and complicated mechanics. Venters is 78 games from passing John Smoltz for 10th all-time in Braves relief appearances, and given how aggressive Fredi Gonzalez was in using him in 2011, Venters could reach that milestone in 2012.
2011 Easily the biggest surprise in the organization last season, Venters went from middling minor-league starter to dominating bullpen piece in the course of a year. The lefty always possessed a plus sinker as notable for its 94-95 mph velocity as its heavy sink, but pitching coach Roger McDowell helped transform his once slurvy breaking ball into a true weapon, focused him on just two pitches in short stints, and the results were immediate. Venters doesn't make it look easy with complicated and effort-filled mechanics, and will likely always have some issues with keeping his walk totals down, but if Craig Kimbrel weren't around, Venters would be the top candidate for 2011's closing job.
2010 Southpaw Jonny Venters gets a lot of ground balls, but is also quite hittable due to a lack of velocity, and his control isn't all that hot either.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any baseball-related skill at which you think you are better than any current major leaguer, and if so, what is it and who is it?
(Truman from Seahaven)
I am not very good at baseball and have a bad throwing shoulder, so I couldn't even say I'd hit better than the worst hitting pitchers or throw better than the weakest first baseman. I am faster than some major leaguers though. I watched Jose Molina saunter out a double the other day, and I am decidedly faster than he is.

Is it mean to say that today I could throw harder than Jonny Venters? Get well Jonny :( (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a keeper league w/ farm system (7x7 obp, xbh, hld, qs)- I am being offered my choice of Matt Moore or David Price, Tyler Skaggs, R. Soriano, Jonny Venters, and two-4 first round picks for my Gerrit Cole and Craig Kimbrel, and Clayton Kershaw. Yes, No, or Maybe So?
(Mitch from Buffalo)
I'm not sure what's going to be available at those picks, but unless it is substantial talent I would pass. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any picks for non-closers worth taking for pure K/WHIP/ERA/maybe win-stealing upside? Basically Tyler Clippard types...
(Mark from Cleveland)
Kenley Jansen #1, but his save upside will make him expensive. Clippard is good. Mike Adams, Sergio Romo (if they let him face more lefties this year and he gets more than 40 IP), Jonny Venters, Hong-Chih Kuo (if healthy), Joaquin Benoit, Grant Balfour (if he doesn't close), Matt Thornton/Addison Reed (whoever doesn't close). (Derek Carty)
2011-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Fredi Gonzalez overused Craig Kimbrel? Coming back to bite the Braves down the stretch?
(Trey from Frisco TX)
That's one of the topics I'm looking at for tomorrow's column; in fact I was so absorbed in it that the chat got a late start. I think the answer is yes given that he's second in the league in appearances to only teammate Jonny Venters. Note that his last two appearances, and the tripling of his home runs allowed total, came during a stretch of three consecutive appearances, and that the last three games he's allowed runs have come on zero days of rest. I'd include Venters, whose 82 appearances lead the league, in the overuse pile as well based upon his September struggles. (Jay Jaffe)
