BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 The Stetter State Theory asserts that as the number of sliders expands, time on the disabled list destroys innings, keeping the season in balance. Though he leads all MLB pitchers in percentage of sliders thrown by a wide margin (according to PITCHf/x) since his debut in 2007, he's been moderately successful against right-handed batters, though his best fit for a good team is still that of a LOOGY.
2011 Mitch Stetter was sent down to Nashville last April when the Brewers decided to give Jeff Suppan one last futile spin through the rotation, and since then the Brewers have moved on to Zach Braddock and Manny Parra as their bullpen lefties. He remains a perfectly serviceable LOOGY, and if the Brewers don’t find a use for him, someone else likely will.
2010 No need to look at the demographic information under his name to determine Stetter’s handedness—his games and innings pitched totals bear the indelible stamp of a situational lefty, and a pretty good one at that. Stetter throws his slider 60 percent of the time, more than any pitcher in the NL, and used it to hold lefties to a feeble .178/.295/.300 line. Righties torched him, however, and he struggled down the stretch, but the Brewers will ride him until he becomes either expensive or ineffective, hopefully several years down the line.
2009 Beating the bushes as a lefty reliever is brief, glory-free work, but that’s pretty much been Stetter's lot since the Brewers drafted him in the 16th round in 2003; coming into 2008 he’d totaled less than 300 minor league innings. After earning a September callup in '07, Stetter spent 2008 shuttling between Milwaukee and Nashville as the team’s second lefty. Unlike Shouse, he held hitters on both sides of the plate in check, a minor trend that has persisted over the past two years. At the very least, he deserved better than pitching in so many lost causes; the Brewers were 10-20 in games in which he appeared. If Shouse moves on, Stetter may move up the pecking order, though he’ll have to compete with R.J. Swindle.
2008 Sore-armed LOOGY candidates are a dime a dozen, but unlike many of the Brewers' other over-age pitching suspects, Mitch Stetter did see time with the big club. Still, he's battling Randy Choate on a depth chart that's hardly worthy of the name.
