BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 A minor-league free agent last offseason, Ruggiano was busy shelling Pacific Coast League pitching for the Astros affiliate in Oklahoma City when a decimated Marlins outfield sent Beinfest scouring for a stopgap. The 30-year-old Ruggiano came over for minor-league catcher Jobduan Morales and picked up right where he left off in Triple-A. Major-league pitchers eventually found ways to exploit Ruggiano’s unpolished approach, but he showed enough to stick as a fourth outfielder with an average glove and a knack for hitting southpaws. Ruggiano’s long-term role is probably on the short end of a platoon, but it’s fair to say that Miami’s scouting department found a useful player at a low cost.
2012 This organizational soldier has been in the Rays' system since a mid-2006 season trade from the Dodgers. He has racked up 2,064 plate appearances with the Durham Bulls over the past five seasons and he has polished the Quad-A patch on his uniform quite well. Ruggiano has the flexibility to man all three outfield positions and shows occasional pop, but in 207 major league plate appearances has never shown enough to justify holding down a spot on a 25-man roster. A Quad-A player and nothing more.
2010 An athletic former Dodger farmhand who came to the Rays as the PTBNL in the Dioner Navarro deal in 2006, Ruggiano mashed Triple-A pitching in 2007-08, but struggled mightily with the big club, and complained of problems with his night vision. Because his corneas are too thin for lasik surgery, he underwent photorefractive keratectomy after the 2008 season; still, that surgery's slower recovery time doesn't explain why he surged in May but flailed for most of the rest of the season. In November, he began working with Jaime Cevallos, the swing mechanic who keyed Ben Zobrist's breakout, but he still faces an uphill battle for a roster spot barring drastically positive results in taming his long swing.
2009 Ruggiano was acquired from the Dodgers in 2006 as an extra body to even-up the deal that also brought them Dioner Navarro. He's a tad old for a prospect, but he's also proven over the past three years that he can hit minor league pitching, though he failed to establish himself in an extended big-league look at the end of the season. He's an excellent athlete, with solid tools across the board, but scouts see him as a bad-ball hitter who didn't get enough of them in the majors while also swinging too often at pitches he shouldn't have. He's stuck behind a full depth chart of outfielders in Tampa, but the good news is that they have excellent barbecue up in Durham.
2008 Something of an organizational player entering last year, Ruggiano had a breakout season in Triple-A, but that only upgraded him to marginal prospect. He has some athleticism and power, but also a date of birth and high strikeout rate that make it difficult to see him as an everyday outfielder. He'll return to Triple-A this year and wait for Baldelli to get hurt.
2006 In his second year out of Texas A&M, Ruggiano advanced quickly. He enjoyed a solid first half at Vero Beach and earned a promotion to the star-studded Jacksonville squad, where he was as hot as any Sun (sorry). He strikes out a lot and could stand to walk more, but it`s conceivable he`ll be helping in L.A. before too long.

2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich is having a fabulous Spring Training with the Marlins. For contract reasons we all know he won't make the team come Opening Day. But after Stanton, he's the best position player anywhere in the entire organization, isn't he? Though that might not be saying more about the Marlins than it is about Yelich.
(Paul from DC)
Stanton is definitely No. 1, and I guess you could make an argument for Yelich as No. 2 right now. PECOTA says Justin Ruggiano should be a 2+ win player this year, which is a nice development for them. But I wouldn't be stunned if Yelich could come up now and outplay that.

By the way, Placido Polanco is third on that list. So yeah, that says something about the Marlins. (Zachary Levine)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Wouldn't the Rays be better served to give Justin Ruggiano an extended look instead of dealing for any right fielder?
(R.J. from Beyond the Boxscore)
Well, until this year, I'd say yes. But if you have a chance to make the playoffs, you have to go for it. I don't think the Rays will be experimenting this year because they are a legit contender. (John Perrotto)
2008-03-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see the Rays bringing Kenny Lofton or someone else to replace Rocco ?
(Tommy from OPS,FL)
I don't think they need to with Gomes around and the possibility that they could bring up someone like Justin Ruggiano or Fernando Perez. As good as Baldelli can be, I don't think this is a case where they have to react to strongly. (Steven Goldman)
