BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Just two years removed from being the Opening Day second baseman for the Tigers, Rhymes now finds himself on the outside of prospecthood looking in, although he does offer good plate discipline, decent infield utility, and a perspicacious Twitter feed as a bench player or Triple-A call-up candidate. The Nationals signed him to a minor-league deal after the Rays let him go.
2012 Last year, in one of the multitude of parallel universes theoretical physicists prattle on about, Rhymes took hold of the reins at second base and provided the Tigers with solid defense, the patient lefty bat they needed at the top of the order, and a name perfectly suited for marketing in Eminem's home town. In our universe, however, Rhymes spit the bit and sent the Tigers rifling through a series of bad options at second base. He was his normal self at Triple-A, a powerless grinder who works his way on base, but Detroit released him in December, meaning he’ll need to unleash his inner Fernando Vina for some other organization if he wants a big league career.
2011 Dimunitive stature? Grinder approach? Entertaingly hirsute? Pun-friendly name? Check, check, check, and check. It may have taken a string of infield disasters to bring Rhymes to Comerica, but once there his style of play was sure to win admirers, if not a solid grip on the starting job. Rhymes plays solid defense, works the count, takes his walks, lashes the occasional gapper, and most importantly looks like he belongs. He doesn’t have Sizemore’s ceiling, but his broad-based skill set and patient lefty bat mean he'll likely have a career.
2009 Infielder William Rhymes can play three positions, makes contact, runs well, and could be a utility player down the road—but don't call him Buster.

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-04-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it time for Scott Sizemore to play in DET and for Will Rhymes to be "scrappy and gritty" someplace else?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
I thought opening day was that time. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)As you said you would target MIF and Catchers for reserve rounds in NFBC. Would you take Will Rhymes over Brandon Allen?
(bfitzge3 from Upstate NY)
No. Rhymes has no offensive value. He's the AL version of Skip Schumaker. (Cory Schwartz)
