2011 Rarely has a name been so apt, but who's the target of Mock-ery, the faithful who believe in his stuff, or the man himself? He won a rotation job in camp, only to suffer a herniated disk in his season debut and sit out the remainder of the major-league season. Long seen as one of the system's few young starters with upside thanks to a plus sinker, this latest injury is why he'll be 28 without having delivered on his promise. In light of the crowded pictures in both the rotation and the pen, not even demonstrating health would guarantee him much consideration.
2010 Consistently inconsistent when he hasn't been just fragile, Mock has now spent two years in the majors. A groundballer with decent command, capable of whiffing almost a batter per frame, his downfall has been a lack of command. The constant shuffling of his roles loom large in his struggles to date, especially as he'd already struggled to achieve consistency in the minors before serious knee problems. If the Nats can steel themselves for a bumpy ride, Mock should simply be given every opportunity to just seize a spot in the starting rotation. His upside looks a lot better than those of most of the alternatives, and if he can finally settle into a groove, he could still be a keeper.
2009 Mock was able to pitch healthy and pain-free for the first time in four years, as he finally recovered from a 2006 surgery on his plant knee. That in turn allowed him to finish his pitches, and not leave them sitting high up on a tee for the hitters. After proving himself in Columbus, he wound up riding quite the yo-yo in mid-summer, being called up and sent back down three different times before being called up for a fourth time, to stay, in August. He was beaten up in three starts (7.20 ERA), but thrived in relief (2.42)—expect him to stay there.
2008 A frustrating pitcher, Mock has lost ground two years in a row after what seemed like a breakout in the California League in 2005. At its root, the problem has been with his plant knee, as he hasn't bounced back well from surgery on the joint. The knee disabled him for the first three months last season. It has also cost him velocity (he used to touch the mid-90s), while also generating problems with his release point because his mechanics are now a bit crooked. There's some thought that he needs to apply himself towards resolving these problems, so while he's been added to the 40-man and had a few good moments in the AFL, he's also going to have to work to get any further.
2007 Mock is among the most frustrating promising arms in any organization, which is why he was available (with Chico) for Livan Hernandez. Scouts see a power pitcher`s body, low- to mid-90s velocity, a good changeup, and two breaking pitches he can throw for strikes. Stuff and command? Sounds great! Except that he keeps turning out to be much more hittable than you`d expect. There`s nothing that anybody has picked up on mechanically that`s begging for an easy correction, and no indication that he`s tipping his pitches. It wouldn`t be crazy to suggest that he`ll suddenly figure it out and become a potentially solid third-starter in the major leagues; it also wouldn`t be crazy to think he`ll just continue to be maddening. Either way, he`s something the Nats should want a piece of, because his chances of panning out are a risk they need to take.
2006 Don`t let the ERA fool you: Lancaster`s a tough place to pitch. He`s got a good sinking fastball and a big breaking ball, and handled the Cal League well enough to lead it in strikeouts. He was also the Arizona organizational leader in that department. His hit rate is worrisome, but since it came in the offensive Cal League, reserve judgment until he hits the high minors. Worth watching.

2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the trio of Nats' AAA Syracuse starters who have been killing the last month - Colin Balester, J.D. Martin and Garrett Mock? Any of them have a real future in the majors?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Balester's on a consecutive quality start streak of six, Mock's at three, and Martin's managed it in nine of 13 turns. That said, Mock and Martin both aren't all that durable and are more organizational types; I'd like to see Balester taken more seriously, but with guys like Stammen and Martis in the mix, the Nats make some strange choices in terms of who they favor.
