2013 Tommy Manzella remains such a slick fielder at shortstop that he may get more major-league playing time before he's done, despite an inability to hit.
2011 A broken right pinky finger interrupted Manzella's rookie season in late June, landing him on the disabled list for two months. He regained his starting job upon his return, but did little to suggest that he's a long-term answer at shortstop. Manzella is a slick fielder with good footwork and a strong arm, but his lack of hitting ability may preclude a career as a regular. Evidently reaching the same conclusion, the Astros dealt for the Rockies' Clint Barmes in November, a move that will likely push Manzella into a utility role for which he is better suited, if not back to Triple-A.
2010 The Astros claim to be over the Miguel Tejada experience (or the expense of it), and have been posturing this winter with the position that Manzella's the antidote. That's great news if you're Tommy Manzella, of course; the 2005 third-rounder out of Tulane had been on an incrementally upward path towards the majors with no guarantee of arriving. Athletic and strong-armed, he should be a defensive asset at short, and while he showed more pop last year, he's also already headed into his age-27 season. A good-glove placeholder, headed for the eighth slot in the order on a good team, but the Astros won't hold up their end of that proposition.
2009 Thomas Manzella fields like a shortstop, hits like a pitcher. His glove is so good he still might make it to the Bigs just on defense alone.
2008 There's an old saying about the ease of finding good-field/no-hit players: "Shake a tree, and ten gloves fall out. "One of them would be a Tommy Manzella model. The starting shortstop on Tulane's College World Series team in 2005, Manzella could play defense in the majors right now, it's just that he'd hit about .175 with no secondary skills. John McDonald's career path is Manzella's upside, but he's unlikely to ever reach the majors.
