|---|---|---|
| 2012-01-10 13:00:00 | Do you think Joe Nathan holds the job (Matt S. from NYC) | Yes. Research I did at CardRunners Fantasy last year shows that the guy who starts with the job is almost always the favorite to finish with the most saves on his team. Even a pitcher with bad skills who starts with the job should be expected to finish with at least 25 or 30. http://www.crfantasybaseball.com/2011/08/12/how-well-can-we-predict-saves/
Plus, Nathan is still a pretty good pitcher. (Derek Carty) |
| 2011-07-21 16:00:00 | 15 team league. Got offered Joe Nathan for Adam Dunn. I'm down in the standing and was hoping Dunn could turn it around. But i gotta take this deal right? (Donny from Chantilly) | If you are really hurting for saves, sure. But I mean, really hurting. (Jason Collette) |
| 2011-06-09 13:00:00 | If Capps keeps dropping the ball, so to speak, who's next in line for saves there? (Sully from Los Angeles, CA) | I guess it's still not time to go back to Joe Nathan, ay? I don't know, and I'm not sure that it matters in real-world terms. Even with as much life as they've shown lately, the Twins are 11.5 games out and don't have the ammo to make a real push. Closers will come--just look at the Astros and Mark Melancon... Who the Yankees threw away. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2011-04-25 13:00:00 | Hi Marc, thanks for the chat. I'm wondering if I should trade Prince + Dexter Fowler for Mariano Rivera + Mike Stanton? My current closers are Joe Nathan (yikes) and Brian Wilson. Along with Prince, I have Votto + A-Roid at the corners...in a H2H points league...Thanks (cbelford from Chicago) | So, you're not using Prince at all? (Marc Normandin) |
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | Is there anyone out there the Twins can add to help the bullpen? I haven't been upset about losing any of the guys they lost (Crain, Guerrier, Rauch, Fuentes) but I was hoping they would add someone, and a lot of the guys I liked have now signed. I'm probably more optimistic than most Twins fans that they can build a solid bullpen out of what they already have in the organization, but it would be nice to add something. (russadams from St. Paul) | If they don't add anything, at least Joe Nathan is back. And as they showed you in 2010, you can find useful relievers during the season if you have to. The market is starting to get pretty thin--maybe the Twins will have to make a deal with the A's if they end up adding Fuentes and have an arm to move. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-03-15 16:00:00 | Very happy to hear the pick up on the Star Trek reference. What are your thoughts on the idea of Francisco Liriano taking over the closer's role for the Twins if Joe Nathan can't come back? (Tim from Tampa) | My wife and I have gone through the entirety of Voyager and DS9 together. We're on season 5 of TNG. Nerd pride!
Liriano was a reliever for a while (and a good one), then they moved him to the rotation. But he also had a big ouchie. I'd like to see what he can do before I install him as a closer/high leverage guy. You can't just assume that he'll revert to his old form in the pen. (Russell A. Carleton) |
| 2010-03-08 13:00:00 | If I recall, Joe Nathan had some chips removed from his elbow in the fall. That's generally not a big deal, right? (Peter from Mankato) | Usually no. All indications are that this is just adhesions (scar tissue), which is uncomfortable, but nothing to be overly concerned about. Nathan's chips were embedded in the UCL, I'm told, so it was a bit more involved than someone like Santana. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-12-17 13:00:00 | What about the Twins trading garbage for Joe Nathan, Liriano and AJ Pierzynski? That was a pretty bad trade if memory serves. (bctowns from Tradesville, USA) | I think you mean trading Pierzynski for Nathan, Liriano and Boof Bonser. Also in the picture, but tempered by Liriano's crash and burn and Bonser's injuries and subsequent suckitude. Nathan is statistically the equal of Mariano over the past six years, minus the postseason success. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-06-03 15:00:00 | The Minnesota Twins have a good team, but they have some production issues up the middle (Nick Punto especially). Will this be enough to sink the Twins this year? (twinkies25 from MN) | While that's a problem, the facts that that Liriano and Baker are carrying ERAs above 6.00 and that the bullpen in front of Joe Nathan is no longer a plus are much bigger ones. They'll do the sinking. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-08-18 13:00:00 | What needs more help: The Twins Bullpen or the White Sox Rotation? (Brock D from Shakopee, MN) | The White Sox have enough depth to patch rotation issues--free Charlie Haeger! I'm not sure if the Twins can say the same about their bullpen, although persistent rumors that Pat Neshek might come back provide hope. It's interesting in that the Twins, for a few years, had these great no-name pens; now, they have Joe Nathan and dreams of Neshek. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-03-25 14:00:00 | Any opinions on the Joe Nathan extension which you'd care to share? (mattymatty from phillly) | It seems about right for what a contender TBNL might be willing to slot for an investment in a closer; if the Twins want to spend that money themselves, instead of converting Nathan into other people's prospects, they'll have made a poor exchange. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-03-18 17:00:00 | Im not sure if a fantasy question is up your alley, but im in a 5x5 head to head 12 team mixed league and am lacking in pitching, i have offered Joe Nathan J.J. Hardy, and Joey Votto(1b and OF eligiable), along with either Khalil Greene or Mike Napoli (Soto is my starter) for Chris Young, Derek Jeter, and Kosuke Fukudome; would this deal be beneficial to me? (Keith from Naugatuck, CT) | It's been a long time since I played in a 5x5 league, but I guess I would have to see who you have at the positions you're giving up in order to be able to fully answer your question. It sounds OK, but I would have to know more.
Having said that, making deals in fantasy is part of the fun. All ofyou: Roll the dice! Get on the phone! Play Trader Lane in the privacy of your tool shed. You're there to have fun. (Jim Baker) |
| 2008-03-07 13:00:00 | What are the chances that Joe Nathan finishes the season in Minn.? (Joe from Boston) | About 4-to-1 against, IMO. Closer is one of those positions where teams almost seem to get more if they wait to trade their guy until July. But he has no business being on (what will likely be) a non-competitive club with his contract expiring at the end of the season. (Nate Silver) |
| 2008-03-05 13:00:00 | Do you play in any AL-only or NL-only leagues? How does the possible trade of, say, Joe Nathan between leagues effect your pre-season valuation of him? (ChuckR from Addison, IL) | I've wanted to play in an AL or NL only league for awhile, but I haven't done it yet. Something about scraping the bottom of the talent barrel is appealing to me though. It would really depend on which team he goes to, since Saves are such a team dependent thing. Edit: It seems I misunderstood the question, so to clear up any confusion, I've been putting together the rankings with standard rules, and I haven't considered AL/NL only options. That's where you want PFM to come in, as you can tweak that to your heart's content to figure out the specifics for your league. (Marc Normandin) |

| 2009-10-28 17:00:00 | 2009 WS Game One | He's well enough to pitch. Lots of guys head for surgery the day after the season. If the Yankees were playing golf rather than baseball, Robertson would have likely had the surgery by now (I think - conflicting sources.) Think Joe Nathan ... oh what's that, no one noticed that Nathan had chips taken out of his elbow last week? (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-09-30 16:30:00 | Twins/White Sox Play-In Game | "cdoyle31 (Phoenix, AZ): Is it my imagination, or did Harold Reynolds really just suggest that Joe Nathan is the best American-born closing option?" No, and he's correct. (Joe Sheehan) |
