2013 Ciriaco is a bright red lichen on a tree trunk. It's beautiful, but lichen can't bloom unless the tree is ill. Ciriaco played for Boston not because he played well, but because the Red Sox ailed. Lacking patience and power, he played on the basis of a flukey hot start and Bobby Valentine's grasping any straw that might pull the team from its tailspin. For a while, it sort of worked. Ciriaco put up an 806 OPS in July, but from August on hit only .274/.299/.368. Ciriaco crushed the Yankees, hitting .415/.436/.566 against them in 14 games, eliciting calls for his statue to be erected on Yawkey Way, but that’s not who he is. He’s Triple-A filler, so if he shows up in Boston this year you’ll know winter didn’t go well.
2012 Hitting like Rey Ordonez in the majors is bad enough. Mimicking Ordonez as a 25-year-old at Triple-A is downright regrettable. Ciriaco has no desire to accept walks and does not hit for enough average or power to atone for his stubbornness. One positive from his 2011 season is an increased familiarity with third base and the outfield corners, adding to his résumé to assume the club's super utility player role. Ciriaco is without options and the Pirates will probably stash him on the bench until his hacking ways drive them to action.
2011 The Pirates seemed genuinely excited when they acquired the speedy and slick-fielding shortstop prospect Ciriaco from the Diamondbacks last year at the trading deadline as part of the Chris Snyder deal, fantasizing that he could blossom into a major-league regular. A month of watching Ciriaco hack away at Indianapolis must have come as a rude awakening, because he can't hit and likely never will. Still, that he never started a game after his September call-up was baffling(he was 3-for-6 in his brief opportunities at bat), since Ronny Cedeno is anything but a sure thing to hold the shortstop job in the long term. Ciriaco almost surely will return to Triple-A to start this season and would be wise to work on developing some plate discipline to help temper his free-swinging ways, but he has so far to go that he could be three times as patient and would still be completely inadequate.
2010 A very raw shortstop with modest defensive skills, Pedro Ciriaco's ability to swipe bags would provide much more impact if he could actually reach base, but his defensive tools alone might get him to the big leagues.
