YearComment
2010 The Mets completed their collection of past-prime utility players by giving Ramon Martinez 42 big-league at-bats.
2009 Things got so bad for the Mets at second base that they called up veteran utilityman Ramon Martinez, started him in each of the final four games of the season, and batted him sixth in the order during the last weekend.
2008 A serviceable enough utilityman who's generally not a Neifi-esque embarrassment with the stick, Ramon Martinez nonetheless spent most of the year below the Mendoza Line, thus wearing out his welcome in L.A.
2007 This Colletti pick-up didn`t bring anything to the Dodgers aside from wistful memories of his namesake`s years in Dodger blue. A .328/.397/.418 first half made it difficult to complain about Grady Little`s sudden fetish for Martinez`s services, but even Colletti knew that was too good to be true, dealing for Julio Lugo. Martinez`s playing time dried up (just 24 at-bats after July 31), and it`s fair to wonder if the team could have better employed the roster spot. Still, Martinez shouldn`t be confused with Neifi Perez. He`s hardly an automatic out--his .252 career EqA compares favorably to any utility infielder you`d care to name--and he won`t embarrass himself at second, short, or third base. The Dodgers re-signed him to a reasonable $800,000 deal with a club option.
2005 Martinez is a capable defender across the infield, but his bat has declined to be point where he's a liability if asked to play every day, a fact which was responsible in some small part for the acquisitions of both Aramis Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra. Though a Dusty Baker favorite, Martinez is not likely to return in 2005 with Macias and Neifi Perez both under contract. Thirty-two is a dangerous age for a middle infielder without his power intact, and PECOTA thinks the end is upon us.
2003 This is what a utility guy should be. He plays a decent second and third and is passable at short. He wields a pretty good stick for an infielder, with league average power and plate discipline. When he’s asked to do too much, as he was in 2001 when he was made the everyday third baseman, he can hurt the team. But as a backup and occasional injury replacement, where he can get a high percentage of platoon-advantage PAs, he’s a big asset.
2002 The trade of Bill Mueller might have cost the Giants the division last year, because their third-base situation was a hole all season long. Russ Davis didn't hit, Pedro Feliz was worse, and Ramon Martinez, a passable solution in the early summer, wore down badly in an everyday role. He hit .153/.189/.224 in 85 August at-bats. As a utility infielder who can field all three spots, Martinez is an asset.
2001 Ballplayer. Ramon Martinez swings hard and can play any infield position well enough to be a defensive replacement. On another team, I'd be clamoring for him to at least receive a shot at the starting shortstop or second-base jobs; here, he's stuck behind two great players. Martinez can fill in for either without the club losing much, which is saying a lot.
2000 He's hitting for a little more power than he used to, and his glove is good enough for his versatility to give him some value as an extra infielder. No star potential, but a good player for a budget-conscious club like the Giants.
1997 Generic second base prospect in an organization full of them. A demotion to AA in mid-season—the Royals flip-flopped him with Hansen—suggests the honeymoon is over for Martinez. Doesn’t do anything poorly, but neither does he have any outstanding skills to attract attention with.
