2014 Minor-league journeyman Russ Canzler continued his tour of the International League but lost his 40-man roster spot after struggling in Indianapolis.
2013 Canzler has been something of a minor-league journeyman, spending nine seasons at 10 stops across three organizations. He is hoping to parlay a three-year power surge of 61 home runs—two-thirds of which came at Triple-A—into a major-league job that will allow him to trade the "journeyman" tag one that says, “late bloomer.” Of course, as a 30th-round draft pick, he has already beat the odds with his 102 major-league plate appearances, and at age 27 he will likely get at least another shot to switch labels. He had a busy winter, claimed off waivers from Cleveland by Toronto, then claimed back by Cleveland, then claimed by New York, where he could be a right-handed bench piece and back-up first baseman.
2012 As with Dan Johnson’s addition, an under-the-radar minor league acquisition paid off in spades for the Durham Bulls as Canzler won the International League MVP honors (just as Johnson had). He produced a .315/.399/.531 slash line on the season with 62 extra base hits, but there are some strikes against him. He doesn’t hit with enough power to play the corners on an everyday basis and bats on the wrong side of a platoon. Like Johnson before him, Canzler has earned his chance to take his hacks against major league pitching. It should not surprise anyone if the two players' stories continue to mirror one another.

2015-03-12 15:00:00 (link to chat)I've read a lot of comments by other BP writers - I'm curious for your take on Pecota's projection for Steven Souza?
(Uri from FL)
I've received quite a few questions on Souza, so I'll tend to him first here. PECOTA's projection is very optimistic because Souza has performed extremely well in Double-A and Triple-A. When you can master those levels, you usually have a high chance of succeeding in the majors, so PECOTA's level adjustment and projection reflects that. It's a straight projection off his prior stats.

That said, PECOTA works primarily off comps, and Souza doesn't comp well. That means his underlying skills, according to PECOTA, are not as favourable, despite great stats. Russ Canzler, Justin Ruggiano, and Ryan Shealy are his top comps -- nothing too impressive there, so PECOTA's UPSIDE metric rates him as a good prospect, but nothing too special.

Jeff Moore and I have an article coming out tomorrow on hit tools and how PECOTA measures underlying hitting skills, if you'd like to learn about all the under-the-hood stuff PECOTA does. (Andrew Koo)
2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who should win the Indians LF carousel? Who has the best chance to stick?
(SaberTJ from Cleveland, OH)
My unofficial survey of who is fighting for the job: Shelley Duncan, Aaron Cunningham, Ryan Spilborghs, Felix Pie, Fred Lewis, and Russ Canzler.

I cannot envision Canzler playing a tolerable corner outfield, so I’ll say not him. Same result with Pie for different reasons. From there, you have Lewis and three righty bats, but Duncan and Cunningham are both out of options. So I guess the Indians might keep those two and store Lewis and Spilborghs in Triple-A for depth. I might opt for a platoon between Lewis and whichever of the two righties you’re higher on. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason. If you were the collective Rays front office, aside from being unwieldy when entering a room, what would you focus on during this trading season? Thanks for the chat.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
First base. Kotchman is on a one-year deal and everyone not in the #MagicofKotch fanclub is extremely suspicious of him repeating this next season. Russ Canzler is the only guy in Durham that could do first base power wise, but he has some big holes in his swing. The outfield should be Guyer/Jennings/Joyce to open up next season so that area is good. The other area is shortstop to plug the gap between Brignac and whichever of Beckham or Lee make it first. Brignac has looked horrendous all season at the plate but they have nothing else to put in there. (Jason Collette)
