2010 Vasquez traveled the waiver-wire circuit from the Tigers to the Red Sox to the Padres to the Pirates in the 2008-09 offseason. The shaggy-headed Vasquez lost out to Karstens in the fight for the fifth starter's job in spring training, but he was back up for a mid-season spin in the rotation, logging three quality starts in seven. A soft touch with an epic poem, his stuff is a little short for a full-time starter to spin in the majors; his fastball rarely touches 90 mph and his curveball, slider, and changeup are adequate. He's the classic "Quad-A" starter, ready at Triple-A to temporarily plug a hole in the big-league rotation when the need arises, but even the Pirates didn't need that for much more than a month.
2009 As desperate as the Tigers were for help in their rotation, their never calling on Virgil Vasquez made it plain they had little interest in his modest command-oriented assortment; signed by Boston to a minor league deal.
2008 Like Trahern, Vasquez's prospect status is based more on what he's done than what he's done it with. A sinker/slider guy, Vasquez has some of the best command in the minor leagues with a career K/BB of 3.3. With Miller, Jurrjens, and Trahern gone, this spring may be his best chance to earn a major league job.
2007 A member in good standing of the Tigers` All-Alliteration Team, Virgil Vazquez mixed his pitches well enough to secure a spot on Detroit`s 40-man roster. He throws strikes and has a reputation as a hard worker, but his stuff doesn`t do more than tread water.
2005 Vasquez was the team's eighth-round selection out of Cal-Santa Barbara in 2003 in spite of collegiate numbers that weren't much to look at. He was selected on the basis of his projectability, which thus far has projected as good command without a real plus pitch, leading to some high hit and home-run rates. Yes, the strikeout rate looks reasonable on the surface, but Midwest League pitchers averaged nearly eight strikeouts per nine innings, so it comes out decidedly lukewarm after translation.
