BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 There comes a point where either the excuses run out or you have to become a Pirate, but as a result of last season Olsen has managed both. He's now four years removed from his first and last good season, with more black ink generated by visits to the DL or off-field distractions than anything achieved on the mound. As the latest fourth starter Jim Bowden overrated and was burned by (although Bowden was canned before he got to enjoy the full fruitlessness of Olsen's labors), there was no upside to reap, no breakout potential, just another shoulder-related shutdown, plus a start or two to show off some of his former brilliance buried amongst another series of beatings. If you take note of him at all, note that health is a critical skill that Olsen doesn't possess, note that he hasn't been any good since 2006, and note that the man's gone to Pittsburgh, where careers go to die.
2010 After showing promise in 2006, Olsen has lost velocity, become more fly-ball prone, and missed time due to injuries, most recently with a small tear in his left labrum. His laundry list of suspensions, legal woes, and insubordination is much longer than the list of his accolades. The hope is that, if he's fully healed, he still has some potential to shore up the rotation; proper recovery from the shoulder injury could add back some of the missing velocity. The Nationals wisely non-tendered him, opting to bring him back on a cheaper deal as a means of mitigating the inherent risk. Only heading into his age-26 season, he's more than worth a flier or two given it wasn't too long ago that he looked like a quality mid-rotation option, and given that the Nats have so very few of those knocking around.
2009 All season, analysts waited for the other shoe to drop on Olsen, but it never landed on its intended target. Somehow, despite losing even more strikeouts and three mph on his fastball, Olsen sliced a run and a half off of his ERA. Yes, he also lopped over 1.5 UIBB/9 off of his rates, but his homer rates were still bad, especially on the road where opponents slugged .507. Olsen also had the benefit of great defensive support from an unreliable defensive unit; looking at his adjusted ERAs tells you how he well really pitched. That won't be the Marlins' problem in 2009, as he was sent to Washington in yet another arb-eligible salary dump; he's a classic example of the kind of starter Jim Bowden overrates and then is disappointed by.
2008 The informed-outsider position we generally take at Baseball Prospectus holds that the non-playing characteristics of a player are both opaque to the outsider-filtered as they are through the media, which has a larger stake in a good story than the truth-and secondary to that player's applied skills. We evaluate performers without regard to their personality, focusing almost exclusively on their on-field performance. At the extremes, however, non-playing factors have to come into consideration. Olsen, who has repeatedly had run-ins with his teammates, his superiors, and law enforcement, exists at one of those extremes. Whatever physical talent he possesses-and his 2007 statistics notwithstanding, he has considerable talent-comes packaged with an inability to interact positively with the people around him on a consistent basis. Olsen's boorishness may wash out as he matures, or it may wash him out of the major leagues entirely. Even an informed outsider can see that.
2007 His spotty mechanics now more or less sorted out, Olsen became one of the more capable pitchers on the team last year with a nasty fastball-slider combo and a good changeup. Olsen also survived the indignity of not breaking camp with the team while other ball-throwing bipeds did. In 2005, it was a toss-up as to who had the better long-term outlook between Olsen and Jason Vargas. It`s pretty clear who`s on top now.
2006 The only thing not to like here is that Olsen finished the year on the DL with elbow inflammation. Otherwise, you have a young, hard-throwing, fastball-slider-change lefty with a great on-mound demeanor who has already been major-league tested--not bad for a 6th-round high school pick. He should outlast the intense competition and win a spot in the Marlins` rotation this spring.
2005 Olsen was drafted out of high school, the Marlins' #6 pick in 2002. He's a tall left-hander who throws a low-90s fastball and a slider, and he hasn't been anything but successful as a pro. His performance record sparkles; his being a slider-throwing pro at ages 19-21 doesn't. Even though he's the best pitching prospect in the system, beware.

2010-06-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm excited about Strasburg, but on my mind is the pleasant surprise of what Scott Olsen's done so far, despite his injury. What kind of pitcher do you think he can be, and how good is a rotation of Strasburg, Olsen, Zimmermann, Lannan and Livan/Marquis/Detwiler going to look in 2011?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
I think he's a below average major league starter who is better than replacement level. He benefits a lot from his home stadium, as his 6.5% HR/FB rate attests.

Strasburg-Zimmerman 1-2 will be pretty nifty though. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-02-17 16:00:00 (link to chat)It seems clear from most of the Nationals blogs that The Constituency is no longer patient, and Mike Rizzo's honeymoon is already over. I have been pretty happy with the moves the Nats made this off-season, but I have to agree that too much depends on the health of folks like Chien-Ming Wang, Scott Olsen and even Chris Duncan. The Nats will be better this year, because they can't help but be. However, is the view of the Nats' offseason more charitable at BP or anywhere else outside of Nats fans' disgruntled little world?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
The kinds of things the Nationals need to do to improve their team just can't be done in a single offseason. To evaluate them on that basis almost isn't fair. I feel the same way about Rizzo. I have a hard time identifying actual things he's done that are that bad. I don't love the Pudge signing and Wang is probably done (but it's a nice gamble). They have to focus on the draft and on international scouting. There's no other path to .500. (I'll hold off on a discussion of Adam Dunn for the next question.) (Tommy Bennett)
