2012 The Mets grew increasingly impatient with Pat Misch, who hasnít thrown a 90-mph pitch in the major leagues since 2008, and the Phillies picked him up to pitch in Lehigh Valley.
2011 Misch is a finesse lefty who has never met a junk pitch he couldn't add to his extensive repertoire. Since he sets up his mid-80s fastball well with softer breaking stuff, the lukewarm heater generates an above-average number of swings-and-misses and is thrown for strikes surprisingly often considering its modest velocity. He may not be suited for exclusive use as a starter, and he doesn't strike out enough hitters to merit high-leverage innings out of the bullpen, but it's hard to ask for much more out of a swingman. Misch has more control than a South American junta and gets the most out of his limited stuff; better yet, he isn't even arb-eligible, so the price is still right.
2010 Once seen as nice little late bloomer in the Giants' system, Misch had regressed a bit over the last couple of years. When they designated him for assignment, the Mets, desperate for any living, breathing biped with a working arm, picked him up. After bouncing back and forth between Triple-A and the Mets for a month, he took over Johan Santana's rotation spot when the team's ace was shut down, and he really didn't do anything to make Mets fan forget their sorrows other than a fluky eight-hit shutout against the Marlins in late September. With a mid-80s fastball and every secondary pitch in the book, Misch is a finesse lefty who doesn't miss bats, and the Mets are hoping that a healthier overall roster in 2010 will reduce him to a back-end bullpen role, if that.
2009 A career starter, Misch pitched well after being converted to relief in 2007, but after his first relief appearance of 2008 saw him pitch the equivalent of a quality start in relief of Barry Zito on April 27, Bochy stuck him back in the rotation as the replacement for the injured Correia. Misch proceeded to post a 7.03 ERA in six May starts, all of them Giants losses. Thereafter he returned to relief and again pitched well in that role in both the majors and Triple-A. A finesse lefty who relies on a good changeup, Misch is more of a long man than a LOOGY, but he should continue to be valuable in that role now that the Giants have a full rotation.
2008 Misch is Noah Lowry without the good years, more or less. Another low-ceiling college draftee by the Giants, Misch took well to a move to the bullpen last year, although he's not your typical starter-to-reliever conversion. A command southpaw with a good changeup, Misch, like a lot of guys, is qualified for a job that doesn't exist anymore: swingman. There are probably 60 pitchers in this book who could make 15 starts and 40 relief appearances at just below league-average performance. All they need is a time machine.
2007 A lefty junkball artist, Misch might have an outside shot at the fifth starter`s job. He`s not going to overpower anybody, but he spins a nice enough curve. Every organization has a lefty like this, but with Russ Ortiz and Jamey Wright in camp, the Giants could probably end up using theirs.
2005 Yet another effective lefty in a system full of pitching sleepers. The Giants made him a seventh-rounder in the '03 draft once the Astros failed to sign him in '02, and Misch has made a swift climb since. Another guy who uses his change as his best pitch, Misch also relies on an average fastball he throws for strikes and a slider-curve combo he can alternate to handle hitters from both sides. He's a relative unknown, but keep him on your radar.
