BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 The 28-year-old right-hander received his first extended look in a major-league uniform, reaping the advantage of a top-tier Oakland defense to keep runs off the board despite his surrendering a slew of base runners via the free pass. Miller had honed his command over the past few years in the minor leagues but the progress failed to translate to the majors, and the Yankees might be in for a rude awakening if Miller is unable to locate his targets with more consistency and/or his BABIP suffers inevitable regression.
2012 Every once in a while there is a pitcher who enjoys a fair amount of success at the minor-league level but who doesn't get a shot in the big leagues until relatively late, if at all. Joel Peralta, Brad Ziegler, and Rafael Betancourt are current examples of guys who have succeeded despite being overlooked for too long. Miller might be another. His numbers aren't overwhelming, but he does own a 10.3 K/9 and a 3.1 K/BB in 403 minor-league appearances. This won't necessarily buy him a chance to prove that his performance isn't a fluke, but it should.
2010 Miller closed for Norfolk all season, never getting The Call despite the revolving door in Baltimore's pen. He pitched well, but gives up too many baserunners to maintain an ERA this low. His big bugaboo is that left-handed hitters rocked him for 100 more points of EqA than righties. Miller was removed from the 40-man roster and cleared waivers, so he should probably renew the lease on his Norfolk apartment.
2007 Jim Miller has battled injuries since his impressive 2004 showing, but his slider has allowed him to build impressive strikeout totals when healthy. He still has a shot, but he`ll likely be repeating Double-A at age 25. This year is make or break for him.
2005 Drafted in the eighth round, Miller was sent to the Tri-City Dust Devils where he went all Eric Gagne on the league: Hitters came up to the plate, and returned the dugout in shriveled despair. Miller struck out 65 in 37 innings, allowing a mere 21 hits. He'll have the opportunity to move quickly, and he's got some reasonable stuff. Don't be surprised to see him in Colorado very shortly.
