YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2012 Everybody loves pitching prospects turned hitting prospects, but the fact is they face more challenges than other players. They are older and have to relearn skills they haven't used in years. Chronic elbow injuries led to Loewen’s conversion to right field. His arm is healthy enough that he had 11 outfield assists in 111 games in the outfield, but most of the improvement in his bat was due to the move to the PCL. That being said, Loewen made it back to the majors and recorded his first hit as a position player in September. His 67 extra-base hits should be enough to extend his comeback attempt another year.
2010 After a promising major-league introduction, Orioles southpaw Adam Loewen suffered an elbow fracture that ultimately forced him to give up pitching and try hitting, but year one of the experiment revealed that he’s no Rick Ankiel, even if some scouts see power potential in his bat.
2008 Loewen got off to a good start last year, proving effective despite severe wildness. Then elbow pain ended his season at the beginning of May. The pain turned out to be caused by a stress fracture, and, when it was discovered that it wasn't healing properly, he had to get a screw put in the elbow. Although rare, the injury isn't career-threatening; other pitchers have made strong recoveries from similar injuries. Loewen should be fully healed by the time you read this, reducing concerns to that early-season wildness, which the Orioles hope was nothing but a symptom.
2007 Loewen was rushed to the majors last year, but the Orioles` rotation was a shambles by May, he was too good for either Bowie or Ottawa, and his contract mandates that he be in the majors for good by 2007 anyway. His two biggest problems are control and endurance, although the two are closely related for him. His batting and slugging averages against increased last year as a direct result of his pitching from behind more often. It is possible that the problem is temporary, a result of a partially torn labrum two years ago; it is also possible that he`s only going to become the monster he was drafted to be by switching to relief.
2005 Another reason why signing draftees—no matter how good—to major league contracts is a bad idea. The Orioles took Loewen to spring training last year; in three games, he got three outs, walked seven and hit one, and gave up nine runs altogether. How much of what followed in Delmarva was injury and how much was shell-shock? He was ultimately found to have a torn labrum, and so far the team is resisting surgery, hoping that an exercise program will create enough strength to overcome the tear.
