2009 While he's hardly the next Fernando Valenzuela, Carlos Guevara throws a screwball, and that's cool enough for us. A Rule 5 pick from the Reds last winter, the Padres were able to hide Guevara on the roster early in the season due to a groin strain, and they finally got permission from the Reds to keep him in exchange for "future considerations." Guevara's scroogie is actually a plus offering that makes hitters look silly, but it's also his only big-league caliber pitch, leaving him firmly in the one-trick Carlos category.
2008 Carlos Guevara, who was snatched away by the Marlins in the Rule 5 draft, is a short, right-handed reliever with a flair for strikeouts and a screwball that keeps lefties off-balance.
2007 Carlos Guevara is an undersized college reliever picked up in the 2004 draft; given his unexceptional assortment, he`s unlikely to ever stick in a middle relief role.
2006 A Division II college pitcher, Guevara pitched well in 2005, but then he should be ahead of Class-A hitters at age 23. With a minus fastball, his ticket to The Show will have to be punched by his screwball--a pitch that is very rarely thrown nowadays. To make it, Guevara will have to combat the prejudice against short righties, right-handers with sub-par fastballs, and disciples of Dr. Mike Marshall.
2005 Former Cy Young winner turned kinesiologist and pitching guru Mike Marshall gets shunned by most of mainstream baseball, probably more for his abrasive personality than his unorthodox mound teachings. He may start to get people's attention if Guevara pans out. The skinny righty reliever throws just an average fastball and slider. But the scroogie he learned at St. Mary's University in San Antonio under pitching coach and Marshall disciple John Maley may be more than a trick pitch that baffles bush leaguers; Guevara throws it to lefty and righty hitters and shows great command spotting it in and out of the strike zone. It's hard to get excited about a minor league reliever, but 14.3 K/9 IP and a whatthehellwasthat?! pitch can really get the pulse racing.
