BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 After a disappointing 2011 campaign, Murphy rebounded with his best season in 2012, posting career highs in nearly every offensive category. A notorious slow starter, he remained consistent throughout the year and, as a result, also set a personal best in games played. Although the native Texan had success against southpaws last season, the sample was small and ran counter to his career trend. Still, the Rangers may need Murphy to play against both left- and right-handed pitching this season, as the departure of Hamilton likely makes him the club’s every-day left fielder. Entering his first year of free agency after 2013, Murphy will be hoping to land a lucrative multi-year deal. But first, he’ll have to prove he can handle the expanded role.
2012 Fans like David Murphy because he is a Texas native, plays with the requisite grit and hustle of someone without top-shelf physical gifts, and has the good face. Some like David Murphy so much that they champion his name as a starter, a player with enough all-around skill to play every day at the major league level. The reality is that David Murphy is a platoon left-fielder with a good (not great) stick against right-handed pitching, a well below-average stick against left-handed pitching, and a defensive skill set that no longer has utility outside of left-field. As he gets deeper into arbitration and deeper into age, Murphy is losing his luster as a cheap fourth outfielder, moving into the category of luxury despite not possessing luxury performance.
2011 Since being acquired from the Red Sox for Eric Gagne, Murphy has used his versatility to deliver value, playing all three outfield spots and providing a solid left-handed bat at pre-arbitration prices. Lauded for his defense in the past, he took a step back in 2010—though he has a strong arm and solid athleticism, his routes aren’t crisp and he lacks the elite first-step quickness that would augment his range. At the plate, Murphy was strong, especially while hitting .311/.388/.509 in the second half, but he's still plagued by below-average performance against left-handed pitching. Given his defensive deterioration, Murphy looks to be a better fit as a fourth outfielder, or perhaps the lefty bat in a platoon situation.
2010 Sometimes strength in numbers reflects the absence of anything that stands out above the ordinary. Consider Murphy, the Rangers outfielder who wasn't given a big boost by his ballpark; he was merely mediocre everywhere. An attempt to add power as the entire lineup got homer-happy in the second half just led to fewer walks, more strikeouts, and negligible gains in slugging. There's no magical happy sub-stratum stat that's going to rescue him from a basic replaceability as the latest overrated Red Sox outfield prospect they sensibly elected to not employ. He's a nice reserve if he can adapt to part-time play, but not a starter on a serious contender. Rusty Greer was two wins better at the same age, so any comparison to good modest-power corner outfielders is wasted here without improvement a la Paul O'Neill after 30, and O'Neill was extraordinary.
2009 Part of the package received for flipping Eric Gagné to the Red Sox for the '07 stretch run, Murphy was enjoying a nice little bust-out season before a knee cost him the last third of the campaign. As a corner outfielder with platoon virtues but shy of massive power, he has his uses as someone to mix and match with Byrd and Cruz, but setting expectations higher than that would be a mistake—he's as good as he's going to get right now.
2008 Acquired from Boston in the Gagn? deal, Murphy was given a full-time job for the last six weeks of the season, during which he hit like the player he wishes he was instead of the player he actually is. A career .273/.343/.407 hitter in the minors, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that his .340 run was real. That said, he's a guy who can play all three outfield positions extremely well and hit enough to be a valuable bench player for the next decade.
2007 The Sox passed over Conor Jackson, Chad Cordero, Chad Billingsley, and Carlos Quentin to take Murphy with the 17th pick in the 2003 draft. Oops. This modestly-developing center fielder is already regarded as MLB-caliber with the glove, but he`s got a way to go with the lumber. Despite a slow start in Portland--the entire team hit .219/.299/.322 in a chilly April--Murphy was promoted to Pawtucket in late May, possibly to be showcased as trade bait. Nobody bit, though Murphy improved his plate discipline and earned a cup of coffee in the Show. He`ll probably start the season in Triple-A, but his defensive skills could earn him a spot on the Red Sox roster. The development of Jacob Ellsbury suggests that Murphy`s window of opportunity in this organization isn`t very wide.
2006 The Red Sox` first pick in the 2003 draft, Murphy has trudged through the minor leagues. His offense picked up considerably in May after a rough start. Coupled with his impressive showing in the Arizona Fall League (.319/.354/.527), Murphy will undoubtedly get a full-time gig in Pawtucket, with hopes of a role with the big club in 2007. The team believes the power potential is there: he`s strong enough and hits the ball a long way, he just needs to center the bat on the ball more often. He already plays major league quality defense in center field. A good year at the plate would help him shed the fourth outfielder label.

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Appreciate your work Ben. What do you make of the OF situation in Texas? Julio Borbon surely isn't an everyday player in this league. Are they crazy for not getting David Murphy 500+ at bats?
(batch1nyy from Ft. Worth)
I wouldn't get too excited about David Murphy in an outfield corner, and I'm not sure how realistic an option Murphy in center would be. He's probably a better fit as a fourth outfielder. Of course, Borbon is probably a better fit as a Triple-A outfielder, so you have a point. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)David Murphy, in his age 28 season, has quietly hit a solid .292/.358/.450. Do you see him matching, or even bettering, those numbers in the coming years?
(Cambridge from Cambridge)
I wouldn't have much confidence in his ability to better that by a large margin, but matching? Sure, for at least a couple years. As a corner outfielder, he can't afford to lose much off of that line, though. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love the fact that the Rangers are winning, but is Ron Washington not the worst game manager in baseball? I mean David Murphy in the 3 hole, Bengie Molina batting betweeen Hamilton and Nellie Cruz. I know that he's a "player's" manager and all, but you could see the disgust in Hambone's face when Wash bunted Molina to get to Cruz after a leadoff double...ok done ranting...thoughts?
(ramjam36 from Fort Worth, Tx)
I haven't seen enough of his day-to-day nature to know if he's a problem in that sense, but I've heard some odd things about sac bunts and lineup placement this year. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Your opinion of the following proposed trade: Astros Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler.
(CTM from Houston, TX)
This would be ghastly, especially for the Rangers. Pence may not really stick as much more than a filler in a corner in the better league, and the Rangers already have that on their bench in the form of David Murphy. Putting him in center seems a stretch, so he doesn't fix that problem. And then how do you replace Kinsler, bump Michael Young to the keystone and put Chris Davis at third? Arias and Blanco aren't viable everyday players. And all of this to get Oswalt, an older, shorter right-hander with health issues, coming to the DH league? As Eric Seidman argued this morning, I think any deal for Oswalt's only going to yield pennies on the dollar, given his contract. He's worth more to the Astros as an Astro than as something to dangle and then wangle with. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Andruw Jones recently had his 32nd birthday. 1) What your odds that he has returned to nearly peak form? 2) Will there be room in the line-up for him when Hamilton returns?
(hotstatrat from at home on my computer)
1) Not great. I like him as a fourth/platoon outfielder who can play center better than anyone else on the roster, though. 2) As long as David Murphy is in the mix, there should be room for Jones, because Jones is no worse a player, and maybe better. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)Andruw Jones has had an encouraging spring thus far. Does he make the Rangers opening day roster and if so what can we expect out of him this year as far as playing time and numbers go?
(tompshock from San Diego)
I'd like to see him batting eighth or ninth and playing center field a lot of the time. The Rangers have simply refused to put good defensive players in the outfield for quite some time. It'd be nice to see if a real CF made the pitching better. Given that I don't think much of David Murphy, I have no problem with a Cruz/Jones/Hamilton outfield, with Murphy as the fourth and Byrd as the fifth. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What would you do with 2b if you were Omar? Castillo is a sunk cost.
(Robert from NYC)
I've been asked by the readers to scout David Murphy. I think you have to see how that transition goes before making Castillo go away. Problem with Castillo is that he can't even fake shortstop, so if he's not your everyday 2B, he's a waste of a roster spot. (Joe Sheehan)
