2010 Aubrey has missed so much time with injuries over the years that its almost impossible to know just what the former 11th overall pick of 2003 is really capable of doing. He started the season in Cleveland's system, joined the Orioles in a minor trade, and moved up after Aubrey Huff was traded away (league rules require the O's to maintain a one-Aubrey quota at all times). He actually hit better in Baltimore—raw, untranslated—than he had in either Norfolk or Columbus, which isn't a good betting position for the future. The void that is Oriole First Base gives him a chance to prove himself, a chance he wouldn't likely get anywhere else.
2009 The multitude of past injuries—back, hamstring, oblique—and the accompanying missed developmental time have leached most of the promise from Aubrey's bat. The former first-rounder stayed healthy enough to play in more games than he did the previous three seasons combined, and made it up for his first major league demitasse, but reversing the trajectory of his stagnant prospect status was too difficult a task. Aubrey's defense is still strong despite a restriction of range from all the ailments, and he could hit his way into a small platoon share of first base at some point this season, but he'll eventually be passed over by the younger first-base options ascending from the sticks.
2008 Arguably the most frustrating prospect in baseball, Aubrey is a career .301/.375/.501 hitter in the minors, but has only played 107 games over the last three years due to a never-ending string of injuries. He now has chronic back problems, constant hamstring issues, and is perpetually mixing in random ailments such as oblique strains and extensive bouts of deja vu, in which he relives the sensation of having a never-ending string of injuries. He can rake, but at this point there's no reason to think he's ever going to perform for the Indians.
2007 When Mike Aubrey is healthy, he`s really good. The only problem is he`s absolutely never healthy. The back problems are officially chronic, the center cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
2005 Aubrey's the best hitter in the system and one of the best first-base prospects in the game. Upon reaching Double-A, he saw a marked decline in both his batting average and overall power, but at least some of that can be chalked up to the hamstring pull, which ended his season. Right now Aubrey smells a lot like Mark Grace, which is just fine as long as you know how to use him properly, which was never the case with the actual Grace—even though Grace's primary skill was reaching base, Cubs managers never could come to grips with the idea that a slow first baseman could bat leadoff or second. Let's hope the Indians know better than to let labels do their thinking for them.
