BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 The Pirates snatched up Hisanori Takahashi banking on some positive regression. He threw just eight innings for Pittsburgh with horrible results.
2012 GMs who sign relievers to multi-year deals always risk over-extrapolating from small samples. Signing Takahashi to a multi-year deal was especially fraught, as the relevant data in his favor comprised just 57 stateside innings with the Mets. The $8 million the Angels committed to him looked, at the time, to be a good investment in a versatile left-hander with a 2.04 ERA and strong supporting peripherals as a reliever. It looks wasteful now, as Takahashi was revealed to be little more than a low-leverage option who can go two innings with a minimal platoon split. As Tony Reagins' much-mocked "huge splash," Hisa belly-flopped.
2011 The Japanese southpaw made his major-league debut this year after the Mets signed him to a one-year, $1 million minor-league deal. That turned out to be an excellent investment, with Takahashi throwing 122 innings between 12 starts and 41 relief appearances. He ranked 10th in the National League in expected wins added over replacement-level pitcher (WXRL) despite just 57 1/3 innings out of the pen, and, given the 821 OPS he allowed as a starter, it's a good thing he found a home in the pen. The Angels signed Takahashi and his excellent changeup for two years and $8 million which, with the way he handled the NL out of the pen, could be a steal of a deal for a team with a middling relief corps.
