2011-06-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)5x5 NL only keeper league: just dealt Sandoval (7), Maybin (9), Storen (18), Rubby (25), Javier Vazquez (16) for Uggla (29), J. Upton (34), and Marmol (13). Uggla's BABIP is historically bad, so I'm thinking he has to come around, and I'm not sold on Maybin's ability to remain productive long term. Thoughts?
(Silv from NY, NY)
I think you got the best player in the deal in Upton. Beyond that, I'm not so sure Uggla's precipitous decline isn't somewhat real. Yes, his BABIP is really bad, but as Colin Wyers has shown (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=13857), after 100 plate appearance, this season's BABIP is pretty good predictor of the BABIP going forward. I don't think you gave up that much - Sandoval's bounceback not withstanding. I have the same concerns about Maybin as you do. (Dan Turkenkopf)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you buy the late-season Z resurgence or was that all about the strand rate?
(Jim Hendry from Chicago)
In my work on trying to figure out the enigma that is Javier Vazquez I found that Zambrano was one of very, very few pitchers who consistently posted ERAs smaller than what the peripheral-based estimators suggest. He may have had a high strand rate but he has proven in the past that he can sustain numbers like that. (Eric Seidman)
2010-11-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to guess now, who do you think becomes the FA bargain of the offseason? My guess was Kuroda, but his deal was quick and relatively expensive. Dunn the other year was a great example of what I mean.....a good player sitting there at a bargain price for anyone to take later in the offseason.
(Will from Mactaquac)
I was with you on Kuroda. Maybe Magglio Ordonez, who hasn't seemed to generate a buzz commensurate with his offensive abilities. Javier Vazquez might make an NL team happy. The market for late-inning relievers is deep enough that someone like J.J. Putz or Grant Balfour could end up signing a below-market deal. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Javier Vazquez has dead arm, I have 3 weeks left before the playoffs and 3 games out... How long does the dead arm thing last typically?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
I have no idea. Sorry. (Colin Wyers)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cliff Lee is headed to New York (apparently) for Montero and some 23 year old AA shortstop I've never heard of (Adams). Thoughts? My first, as a Red Sox fan, is Ruben Amaro, you're such a &$%%#%.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
This morning I saw this news come out of Buster Olney's Twitter account, and the swearing in my head subsided when I saw it meant Javier Vazquez could be dealt to the Padres because of it. The Red Sox can make the playoffs, of course, even with the injuries they have, but the Yankees getting Cliff Lee means they need to get through the Rays to do it. The Padres getting Javier Vazquez when teams like the Dodgers, who are chasing them, are in need of starting pitching help, would be wonderful--and would also make it easier to go a few weeks without the help of one Mat Latos. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could Javier Vazquez for Blanks seem reasonable? Blanks hasn't contributed to the Padres at all this year, isn't an outfielder and the Yankees could turn him into the DH he is probably born to be, with occasional guest spots in Left Field.
(dcoonce from bloomington indiana)
I don't think that would do it for New York, unless it allowed the Padres to give up a lesser reliever. Hoyer is intent on developing the young hitters they have, and Blanks is one of them. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)Given the strong starts by Hughes at the back end of the Yankees rotation, plus the solid contributions of Joba out of the pen, what is to become of Vasquez? Is his poor start just the season premiere of Sample Size Theater, and if not is it possible that his spot in the rotation may be in jeopardy with a few more bad weeks? If so, who would fill that role?
(OTSgamer from Dallas, TX)
The reactions to Javier Vazquez's 2010 season seem to be mostly be confirmation bias. The fact is that Javier Vazquez is one of the very best pitchers in baseball. Now, Javier Vazquez has not pitched like the elite pitcher that he is this year. Everyone wants to talk about getting his head straight but his fastball is 2.2 mph slower. That's a big deal. Vazquez needs that, and that's why his whiff rate is way down. In terms of a replacement if he's hurt, I think they probably don't need to go crazy here. Probably a regular replacement level pitcher still wins a few games for them. They have 4 good starters already w/o Vazquez. (Matt Swartz)
2010-03-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)As a second starter freezer in a custom Yahoo league that uses a full range of stats, would you go with Yovanni Gallardo or Javier Vazquez? That is, tons of potential on a lesser club, or the older guy off the great year going back to the tougher league?
(Yatchisin from Fantasy Land)
I've been thinking about getting a second starter freezer for my basement if they ever go sale. Seriously, I'd take Gallardo. I just think he has all the talent to be one of the best starters in the NL. (John Perrotto)
2010-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for the chat, Shawn. Do you play fantasy baseball? Who do you like better over the next few years: Ben Sheets or Daisuke Matsuzaka? Brandon Webb or Javier Vazquez?
(Dennis from LA)
Assuming all are healthy, Sheets and Webb, based purely on per-start quality. Especially with Vazquez moving into a stadium that really doesn't play into his strengths, and DiceK coming off an injury himself.

But the reality is that Sheets is never going to be healthy over a "next few years" type period, and I don't know if anybody has ever been healthier than Vazquez. If I'm betting on quantity, gotta take those two. (Shawn Hoffman)
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Most underappreciated season this year?
(dtwhite from Toronto)
Javier Vazquez or Chase Utley. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jurrjens is young, durable and cheap. Even if he's not a #1 starter, why fix what's not broken? I don't get it. Trading Javier Vazquez, now that makes sense.
(Christopher from Nashville)
Because other teams value the fact that he's young and cheap and durable, too, and might pay a premium for that. Also, given his peripherals, the odds are that he's not going to perform quite to this level again. He's at his peak value.

The bottom line is that when you've got a perceived surplus of pitching, you can afford to explore multiple options to find ways to improve your team. Like I said, that's a nice probelm to have. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Any obvious moves the Braves need to make at the deadline? Don't know how much of a system they have to deal from anymore...
(steveomd from Georgia)
One obvious move, don't even THINK of trading Javier Vazquez. I'm not sure where these rumors came from but Vazquez is one of the major reasons they have a fighting chance of the wild card/division, and getting rid of him makes no sense whatsoever. (Eric Seidman)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Eric, on your IMDB page it says you haven't missed a 76ers game in years. Might we see you write for Basketball Prospectus?
(Jay from SD)
One of my goals for 2009 was to get more in tune with advanced basketball analysis. It hasn't happened yet for lack of time but I think it would be fun to compare my scouting eyes from watching so much over the years to what the numbers say. With baseball, I tend to only watch the Phillies, Greg Maddux, Matt Cain, and the 5 innings of Javier Vazquez before he implodes. With the NBA, I could watch a Grizzlies-Wizards game and be entertained. (Eric Seidman)
2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've been very interested to hear the thoughts of someone from BP on the Braves' signing of Lowe. Got any?
(Matt A from Raleigh)
Moving away from the Hall questions for the time being, I like this signing, though the price is a lot steeper than it should have been based on the reports of what the Mets were offering. Lowe is an ultra-durable groundballer who's solidified into a much better pitcher since leaving Boston, even beyond the obvious advantages of his move from Fenway to Dodger Stadium, park- and leaguewise. Over the last four years, he ranked 11th in the majors in SNLVAR, 10th in innings, and 12th in ERA+. While he's entering his age 36 season, there's nothing about him that suggests he's a particular health risk or that he's at risk of a sudden collapse.

The bigger issue for the Braves, however, is that while Lowe and recently acquired Javier Vazquez are both solid #2-type starters, neither is anywhere near the caliber of Johan Santana or Cole Hamels, the NL East's big guns. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does a Mike Lowell for Javier Vazquez swap makes sense? They have similiar contracts (2 years, 23-25 million left), the White Sox could use a 3B while the Red Sox get a 5th starter and can go after Teixiera like they want to.
(Theo from (Boston))
I think it makes sense for you. I think it's a ridiculous idea for the White Sox. Vazquez isn't a "fifth starter," he's a very reliable #3, and I don't know what you can expect from Mike Lowell over the next two seasons. Josh Fields isn't very good, but is there that much difference between him and Lowell that you'd trade Vazquez to get it? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Average PAP: Wood is first and Prior third Total PAP: Wood second, Prior fourth (Javier Vazquez first, Livan Hernandez third)
(Ralph from Montreal)
There you go ... and where are Cueto and Volquez now? (Will Carroll)

2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesI kind of like the White Sox today, largely because I think Javier Vazquez is pretty underrated, and James Shields can give up the homers that drive the Sox offense.

Charlie Manuel is really growing on me. It's like listening to Bobby Bowden. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameRich (Columbus, OH) notes, "Hawk wants to start Clayton Richard Game 1 if the Sox make the playoffs? It's a good thing the White Sox got him out of the front office and keep in an observational role only."

It's easy to bash on Hawk--his one-year reign of error was a low point of some sort in Sox history--but in this one instance, maybe he's got a point, if only because the Rays lose about 40 points of slugging against southpaws, and a bunch of OBP. However, that's season-cumulative info, and with Longoria and Baldelli back... it's an overreaction to Javier Vazquez's troubles, to be sure, and Vazquez would be starting on regular rest come Thursday, should the Sox get there, of course.
