2005 Like Rauch, a big dude, but with even more mediocre stuff. Tucker's biggest asset is his ability to serve as a swingman, providing four or five passable innings on short notice when a Day or Ohka needs to sit for a week. This is not the guy you want in there when Armas misses half the season to his latest shoulder malady, though. The Expos have plenty of decent arms knocking on the door for that.
2003 Along with Scott Stewart, Tucker formed a Burly Boys combination that whupped NL hitters through the season’s first couple of months. Frank Robinson’s ride-the-hot-hand bullpen plan took its toll as the season wore on though, hurting Tucker more than any other pitcher. Regular shellings turned into whispers of a dead arm and eventually a trip to the DL with a strained back. The skills are there, but Tucker needs both a deft bullpen handler and a trip to Jenny Craig to stay successful over long stretches. The Expos do have a deep stable of bullpen candidates if he falters again.
2002 The aborted comeback of “El Sid” along with the retirements of Alex Fernandez and Tony Gwynn have left the ranks of the horizontally gifted a little...uh...thin. Large-boned T.J. Tucker could help fill the breach, though he will take his improving three-pitch arsenal and gopher-ball fetish back to Ottawa to start the season. Not to drone on about Tucker’s lack of conditioning, but how often does a team feel compelled to note that a player “worked out every day over the off-season” in its media guide?
2001 Since being a first-round pick in 1997, T.J. Tucker missed most of ’97, ’98, and 2000 with injuries. None have been major; this year it was a forearm strain that healed slowly. There have been constant complaints about Tucker’s conditioning. When healthy, he throws in the low 90s with little or no movement; he’s still perfecting a curve and change-up.
2000 He’s a hard-throwing high-school pitcher drafted the same year as Bridges, which is where the similarities end. In an organization filled with big lanky pitchers, Tucker is a hefty kid. In part of the organizational shakeup in early May, Tucker was bumped up to Harrisburg at the same time Hebson and Bridges moved up to Jupiter. He wore out and was shut down early, not even appearing in the playoffs. Considering his age and lack of experience, it looks like a good call. Moving up faster than expected, he might get a cup of coffee by September.
