BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Traveling left arm with a brain attached, Royce Ring pitched quite well at Scranton, but even when Marte went down the Yankees showed no interest. Had he pitched well during his September call-up he might have claimed a post-season roster spot. Alas, 'twas not to be, and given Ring’s age and past performance, glory delayed probably means glory denied.
2010 You'd think a skipper with a taste for operatic tedium in-game would attempt the Royce Ring, but even TLR has his limits for situational Siegfrieds; Ring spent the year waiting for Miller time to end, and it didn't.
2009 Ridgway couldn’t be much worse than last year’s second lefty, Royce Ring, who pitched himself off the team and out of the organization, in part by allowing righties to hit .419/.471/.674.
2008 Even though he's a closer-turned-LOOGY, this stat is pretty weird: Ring has never thrown 40 innings for any team in any season as a professional. That's a combination of how he's been handled, a couple of midseason trades, and the occasional injury. Now years removed from the first-round-pick hype, he's become a power lefty who's ready for Arthur Rhodes' old job. Ring has that kind of stuff, and will be a key part of the Braves' bullpen this year.
2007 Ring was a Met long enough to have been traded for Roberto Alomar. The team never showed much interest in using the former first-round pick as a situational lefty despite some decent minor league results--this year, lefties hit .140/.204/.140 against him, albeit in a small sample. Shipped to the Padres in the Ben Johnson deal, he should get more of an opportunity.

I love Kevin Towers, I really do. And I want him to get another job as a general manager, because he deserves. The fact that the man who acquired Heath Bell and Royce Ring for Jon Adkins and Ben Johnson may be a GM in the NL West, and not on the Padres, scares me big time. But as an analyst I love it, because the NL West should become even more ridiculous. (Marc Normandin)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneTwenty-three UBB for Young all year... And here's where you can first-guess the Yankees for not having another lefty in the pen. Not that I'm a big Royce Ring fan or anything, but this was something that was an apparent problem as early as Damaso Marte getting hurt. (Steven Goldman)
