BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 There's no skill more apt to keep a poor player employed than the ability to squat behind the plate and while Ronny Paulino isn't especially talented, he's a catcher, so he'll have a job as organizational depth for a few more years.
2012 Paulino was the bottom part of the catching platoon in 2011, getting the majority of playing time against left-handers, not that he's especially deft against them. He's a tribute to a dearth of catching in baseball, as he's not especially good at anything, either at the plate or behind it, and he did himself no favors with his employers with his attitude. Teams need catchers, even bad ones, but when picking through the scrap heap, they're going to take the nice guy over the one who at one point in a late-season game, almost refused to pinch-hit. Thus, the Mets cut ties with Paulino in December.
2011 Sucked into everyday action after John Baker's breakdown, Paulino flaunted all of the defining characteristics of his career, struggling to top a .300 on-base or slugging percentage against righties, mashing against southpaws (.338/.390/.491 in 531 career PAs), and providing a durable target with solid receiving skills and a strong arm behind the plate. Added up, that's useful enough as backup catchers go, but Paulino simply gets overexposed trying to cut it as an everyday player. It isn't his fault the organization lacked an alternative, but whether Paulino is a Fish come February or showing up at your club's camp, he'll have to miss the first eight games of the regular season to complete his late-August 50-game suspension for testing PED-positive.
2010 Paulino might have found his best destiny as the short half of the Marlins catching platoon. Paulino has hit only .252/.305/.347 against right-handers on his career, but he's a whole other guy against southpaws, hitting .333/.392/.485 with 13 home runs in 390 at-bats, and as you know from reading the Wes Helms comment, that's actually pretty good. He's also the half of the platoon with John Baker that can throw, and since Kyle Skipworth isn't coming quickly and Brett Hayes isn't coming at all, Paulino should get to prosper in the role.
2009 No Pirates player was hurt more by the franshise's regime change than Paulino, as he first lost his starting job to Doumit at the end of spring training, then he moped and got out of shape, and then had even the dignity of being a big leaguer stripped from him with a demotion to Indy. Even upon his recall with roster expansion in September, Paulino started just one game. Clearly, a fresh start was called for, and he'll get it after being traded to the Phillies.
2008 As big of a surprise as Paulino was in 2006, when he came up from the minor leagues in mid-April and seized the starting catcher's job, he was that much of a disappointment in 2007. Paulino's work habits last year were poor and he regressed both at the plate and behind it. Most of his regression on offense, however, was due to a 47-point dip in batting average, as he actually hit for more power and saw very little change in his walk rate. There's still potential here if Paulino can improve his worth ethic and get his average and his defense to rebound.
2007 Paulino was lost in the great flood of quality rookies in 2006, but he posted a WARP3 of 4.9, good enough for third among National League catchers behind sophomore Brian McCann of the Braves and fellow rookie Russell Martin of the Dodgers. Paulino is two years older than Martin and three years older than McCann, but there`s nothing new about a catcher getting a late entry into the big leagues. He`s a plus guy behind the plate but his lack of noticeable secondary offensive skills (.050 on-base and .084 slugging) are a bit worrisome in a regular; a batting average collapse would take his whole offensive game down with it.
2006 Paulino is one of the most underrated prospects in the system. The organization loves his defensive skills, and he`s cultivated a good power stroke over the past two seasons. The problem, for the time being, is that Paulino is behind Ryan Doumit in the organizational catching queue. However, because of his superior glove, it may be Doumit who finds himself moved to another position. The Pirates have had to make a lot of decisions like this in recent years: Craig Wilson: animal, vegetable, or mineral? Is Tike Redman or isn`t he? Who`s on first? Whatever the case, they`ve rarely been decisive, meaning they might not commit to either Paulino or Doumit at catcher for a long time. Jim Tracy`s first test will be to demonstrate more ability than Lloyd McClendon at sorting out options.
2005 The Eastern league's All-Star catcher hasn't had an easy path, having lost time in 2003 to the Rule 5 draft (yes, it was a problem in previous years too), and injuries plagued him in 2002 and 2003. However, he finally put in a healthy season, and played his way onto the 40-man roster. His future depends on two things: If Cota fails to claim the job from Santiago some time this year, and if Doumit keeps getting hurt. He lacks Doumit's offensive potential, but he's not too dissimilar from Cota, including the plus defensive rep.

DateQuestionAnswer
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ronny Paulino: good enough to get 500 plate appearances on a championship team?
(mase1361 from Boston)
No. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)You didn't just compliment the Pirates, did you (re: Doumit)? In all seriousness, can they get anything of real value for Nady? Bay? Or should we all just start preparing to be disappointed in the return when they (hopefully) deal them?
(mak1277 from (state of shock))
I did indeed--I love that the new crew up top decided to take a page from the Indians playbook and take Doumit seriously as a catcher. The pity is that Ronny Paulino's better than the starters on a lot of teams, but even more so in the league where the pitcher hits, you have to maximize offensive production any way you can. Doesn't hurt that Doumit came to camp in great shape and seems to have sharpened up his catching skills, of course.

As far as the outfielders, never say never. I refer to "trading circles" at times, where you'll find that GMs who relate well to one another make deals among themselves. Last I checked, the Indians need outfielders, and I would suspect Mr. Huntington might just know a bit about who they have down on the farm. (Christina Kahrl)
