BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 In nearly 700 PCL innings, Matt Palmer owns a career 4.86 ERA, which is high even for a hitter-friendly league and which might keep him from making his obligatory three big-league appearances in 2013.
2012 Matt Palmer, an older, less accomplished version of Dustin Moseley, enjoyed marginal success with the Angels in 2009 but served primarily as a Triple-A insurance policy over the past two seasons, a role he will continue to fill for the Padres in 2012.
2011 The greatest danger to a team lies not in crashing at the pad of a replacement player like Palmer when the situation calls for it, but in signing an extended lease. The righty turned in yeoman’s work while helping to patch together a fractured rotation in 2009, but the Angels wisely quit, if not while they were ahead, at least before they were behind, asking him to take the ball at the start of only one game last season, and limiting him to just over 30 innings overall. The righty was a 30-year-old rookie for a reason: His sinker and cutter barely top 90 on a good day, and neither his harder stuff nor his slow curve induces an above-average rate of whiffs. Palmer has experienced some superficial success in relief, but only accompanied by the sort of unsightly strikeout-to-walk ratios that augur high ERAs to come.
2010 A 30-year-old rookie who spent seven years in the Giants' chain, Palmer landed in the right place at the right time for the Angels. He stepped into their decimated rotation in late April, notched wins in his first five starts, and went 9-1 despite a 4.66 ERA in that role thanks to 7.2 runs per game of offensive support. His ERA was a respectable 2.74 out of the bullpen, though his strikeout and walk rates were considerably worse. Palmer doesn't miss many bats; he's a groundballer who uses a sinker, cutter, and curve to get by with a little help from his leather-wielding friends. He won't go 11-2 again, but he's an adequate utility pitcher.
