2003 Would Wilton Guerrero have made the big leagues if his name were Wilton Copelovich? Heís got one of the worst batting eyes in baseball, no power, and a brutal glove at every position on the diamond. It has to be some deluded hope that he can somehow tap into 1/10th of Vladís ability, right? Actually, Wilton puts the bat on the ball and can slap singles reasonably well. So maybe itís just the misguided views of the talent evaluators and managers who value those sorts of things. Vlad will need a new bridge partner after the Expos released Wilton, a move that will have zero effect on the Guerrero with talent.
2002 Guerrero is another one of Bob Booneís silly experiments, but one with a semblance of a point. Guerrero may well be one of the best positionless, punchless pinch hitters around. He can run, he can hit for a decent average, and he can put the ball in play. He can play badly anywhere on the field, and heís already under contract for $850,000. These are all good things, arenít they? He might have value if rosters go to 27 men.
2001 In the pantheon of siblings who werenít as good as their brothers, Wilton Guerrero isnít quite up at the Joe Niekro end of the spectrum. Still, he belongs, because he also isnít all the way down at the other end of the scale with Stephen Larkin and Craig Griffey. He makes a fine pinch-hitter; the Expos just need to stop playing him semi-regularly.
2000 What is the price of greatness? Apparently, a sidekick. While Alou talks about getting him playing time in the outfield, big bro isnít worth the trouble. Now that Vidro has broken through, thereís no position for Wilton and he doesnít hit enough to play anywhere regularly, anyway. He has value as a latter-day Rodney Scott, playing the middle infield once in awhile, pinch-hitting and pinch-running. Like Chris Gwynn before him, he shows that the Dodgers have an uncanny knack of picking the right bloodline, while missing by a sibling or two.
1999 Imported to make Vlad happy? Perhaps, but the Expos had no viable middle infield alternatives in the upper levels, so he's not as useless in Montreal as he would be to other clubs. The cost of the long-term contract he will eventually get will be brushed aside as the cost of doing business with his brother. The Expos are considering moving him to centerfield, which makes almost as little sense as the rumored Womack shift from second to center in Pittsburgh.
1998 I have not now, nor will I ever, have use for a player that doesnít walk a minimum of 40 times a year. Getting on base is the seminal offensive skill, and you must be good at it to help a club. If you donít walk, in order to be good at getting on base, you have to hit well in excess of .300. If you hit well in excess of .300, you will be expensive to retain. No power and no walks? Iím a Rob Deer and Warren Newson fan. Iíll have none of that. Guerrero will never be as good a player as Adam Riggs is right now.
1997 Wears the ďprospectĒ label well. In my bloated opinion, heís absolutely no prospect. Doesnít play the middle infield particularly well, and with his bat heís got no value anywhere else. Could hit .320 in the majors and be worthless. The Dodger brass would be wise to advise him to get on base more if he wants to play in the bigs. No matter what, his defense looks pretty ugly in the middle of the diamond.
1996  Guerrero is on everyone's list of top shortstop prospects, but be warned: he's an Alfredo Griffin-style basepath commando (55% SB rate for his career, and it's going down each year), he won't take a walk, and as you can see, he doesn't have any power. If he doesn't hit .300, and if he fields anything like the other Dodger prospects of late, he could be stuck in Albuquerque for a while. After all, this is the organization that took a good, long look at Rafael Bournigal in '94, who probably couldn't beat Mark Belanger out for a job if the union man hung up his briefcase.
